Pacers Drop Contest To Owls

Box Score KENNESAW, GA--Jeremy Brotherton's solo home run in the bottom of the eighth lifted the Kennesaw State Owls (25-21, 12-13 PBC) to a 6-5 win over the USC Aiken Pacers (24-20, 9-13 PBC) in Peach Belt Conference baseball action at Stillwell Stadium on Friday night in Kennesaw, Ga.

The Pacers, who have dropped four of their last six, fall to 3-10 in conference play on the road. USCA has now lost 10-straight games to the Owls and is just 6-27 all-time against KSU. The Pacers last beat Kennesaw State 10-3 on March 26, 2000.

KSU opened with two runs in the bottom of the first on a solo homer off the bat of Scott Hendrix (8) and an RBI double by Brett Campbell. On the evening, the Owls had six extra base hits, two homers and four doubles, while the Pacers could only muster one, a double by Ashley Farr.

Clint Watters' double to left field in the second plated Derrick Tucker to make it 3-0.

The Pacers erupted in the third for four runs to take their first lead of the game 4-3. A throwing error by Owls' hurler Sammy Reed on Brandon Barenie's sacrifice bunt allowed Justin Williams and Bob Hatcher to score. Tony Hanks singled to left field scoring Barenie while Farr's two-bagger to center field set him up to score on Robert Davis' single to left field.

Farr finished 2-for-4 with one run scored while Hanks and Davis were each 2-for-5 with one RBI.

Kevin Gergel knotted the game back up at 4-4 in the fifth on an RBI single to center field, but the Pacers countered with a run of their own in the top of the sixth. Back-to-back singles by Davis and Bradley Key set up a sacrifice fly for Hatcher as USCA went ahead 5-4.

Dustin Atkinson doubled in Tucker in the bottom of the inning to again even the score at 5-5. In the eighth, Brotherton's (2) one-out blast over the left center field wall gave the Owls the game 6-5.

In a pinch hitting role in the ninth, Chris Sheehan led off with a single up the middle and was prompted sacrificed to second base. After Hanks struck out swinging, Farr drew an intentional walk. Davis then struck out swinging to end the game.

Watters, Gergel, and Tucker each went 2-for-4 and combined for two RBI and three runs scored. Hendrix was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored for KSU.

On the hill, Reed (5-2) scattered nine hits and one walk over 8.0 innings, allowing five runs, one earned, striking out four in the win. Brett Campbell (8) had an eventful ninth, allowing one hit, walking one, and fanning two for the save.

Steve Dunham (2-8) surrendered six earned runs on 12 hits, striking out four in the loss. Nick Wandless retired both batters he faced in the eighth.

USC Aiken and Kennesaw State will close out their conference series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM.
