Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, GA--USC Aiken (23-18, 9-12 PBC) pounded out 19 hits en route to a 13-9 win in the final game of their Peach Belt Conference baseball series with 10th ranked Augusta State (30-11, 14-7 PBC) to avoid the sweep. The Jaguars won game one of the doubleheader 8-4. Junior second baseman
Daniel Quartararo went a combined 5-of-10 with three RBI and four runs scored on the afternoon in extending his hitting streak to 18 games.
In game one, every time USCA snatched the lead, the Jaguars countered. The Pacers got on the board in the top of the first on a bases loaded, RBI ground out by
Chris Sheehan. But ASU answered with two of its own in the home half of the inning. Three consecutive doubles by Lee Rose, Sam Barth, and Bennett Mayfield off Pacers' ace
Steve Dunham quickly made it 2-1 Jags.
USCA started the fifth off with back-to-back singles by
Ashley Farr and
Bradley Key, setting up a two-RBI single to right field off the bat of
Robert Davis to push the Pacers back in front 3-2.
Again, ASU countered in the bottom of the inning. Rose doubled to right center and then scored on an error by Key at third. Dustin Taylor also singled home Mayfield to give the Jags the 4-3 advantage.
Farr (10) led off the seventh with a home run to center field to knot things up at 4-4. But a four-run outburst in the bottom of the seventh gave ASU the 8-4 win. Rose homered to lead off the inning while Steven Cornett, and Kevin Kelley had RBI singles.
Davis went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Pacers. Farr and Key both added two hits and a combined three runs scored.
Rose was 4-for-5 with one RBI and three runs scored for Augusta State. Mayfield, Taylor, and Cornett each chipped in two hits.
Justin Walker (5-2) scattered nine hits and three walks, allowing four earned and striking out three in 6.1 innings of work in the win. Brandon Carswell held the Pacers to one hit and one walk over the final 2.2 innings.
Dunham (2-7) let up eight runs, six earned, on 12 hits and one walk, striking out five in the loss.
Nick Wandless worked the final 1.2 innings allowing one hit and two walks.
In game two, the Pacers' offense finally arrived at Jaguar Field. After managing just four runs on 12 hits in the first 18 innings of the series, USCA pounded out 13 runs on 19 hits in the seven-inning finale to post the 13-9 win.
Trailing 1-0 entering the top of the third, Farr, Davis, and Key led off with three straight singles to load the bases.
Mike Cunningham's ground out plated Farr while
Tony Hanks' base knock to center field brought around Davis and Key to make it 3-1.
After Rose homered in the bottom of the third to trim the margin back to 3-2, Davis picked up a pair of RBI with a single up the middle and Key (9) smoked a two-run blast over the left field fence as the Pacers scored four to blow the game open 7-2.
Quartararo added an RBI single in the fifth and
Justin Williams (2) belted a two-run shot to right field as the Pacers claimed a 10-2 lead.
Augusta State rallied back with four in the bottom of the fifth keyed by a Chris Demons' double down the left field line scoring two to cut the advantage to 10-6.
But the Pacers tacked on two more in the sixth on a pair of RBI singles by Williams and Quartararo and then one more in the seventh to take a 13-7 lead.
Quartararo went 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored for USCA. Farr, Davis, and Key each added three hits and combined for six runs scored and four RBI. Hanks was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Williams went 2-for-5 with three RBI.
Demons led the Jags going 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored.
On the mound, Derek Claussen (4-3) allowed six runs, five earned, on four hits and three walks, striking out one in 4.1 innings in the win.
Peden Rucker surrendered three earned runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of relief while Wandless closed the seventh allowing one hit and fanning one.
Carswell gave up three hits and two walks, striking out one in 1.2 innings as the starter. Dustin Taylor (1-1) came on in the second allowing three earned runs on five hits in the loss.
USC Aiken returns home to host Claflin University in non-conference action on Tuesday, April 13 at 6:30 PM at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. The Pacers have won seven-straight at home and 14 of their last 16 at the friendly confines.
