Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C.--
Ragen Reeves hit a solo home run in the second inning and drove in the game winning run with a double in the bottom of the eighth to lead the USC Aiken softball team to a 5-4 win today over Wheeling Jesuit University (W.V.) in the second game of a doubleheader at Pacer Park on the USCA campus. The Lady Cardinals (2-4) won the first game 4-3. The Lady Pacers move to 8-7 on the season.
After Reeves put USCA in front 1-0 with her blast over the left-center field fence Wheeling Jesuit scored twice in the next inning to take the lead. Lakisha Jones drove in both runs with a single through the right side. The Lady Cardinals added a single run in the fourth and fifth innings to build a 4-1 advantage.
A Wheeling Jesuit error on an attempted pick off at third base allowed the Lady Pacers to close within two runs after five innings.
USC Aiken still trailed by two runs going into the bottom of the seventh.
Sarah Harvey singled to lead off the inning and
Jayme Durand walked. Reeves drove the ball into center field scoring both base runners and tying the game at 4-4.
In the bottom of the eighth
Jami Cornwell led off the inning and reached on an error. After a sacrifice bunt and a walk, Reeves came to the plate again, this time with a chance to win it. The sophomore catcher drove Ashley Rawson's pitch into center field, scoring Cornwell from second base.
Reeves finished the game with three hits in four at bats, one run scored and four RBIs. Cornwell went two-for-five with a run scored.
In game one, the Lady Cardinals took advantage of three USCA errors to score four runs in the top of the third. Back-to-back errors by Cornwell with the bases loaded allowed two runs to score. Back-to-back walks with the bases loaded plated two more for Wheeling Jesuit.
The Lady Pacers got two of the runs back in the bottom half of the third inning. Harvey doubled up the middle to score Cornwell and
Brooke McSwain to close the gap to 4-2.
A fielding error on WJU's Megan Burd in the bottom of the seventh scored
Sarah Harvey and brought USCA to within one run with two outs and a runner at second base.
Jennifer Scott lifted the ball straight up behind the plate to end the rally.
The Lady Pacers will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to face Newberry College, in Newberry, S.C., beginning at 2:30 p.m.
