Box Score AIKEN, S.C.--Eight consecutive hits, followed by a sacrifice fly, allowed Barton College to plate seven runs in the second inning. USC Aiken rallied, but fell to the Bulldogs, 8-7, tonight in a non-conference baseball game at Roberto Hernandez Stadium on the USCA campus. The Pacers scored twice in the ninth inning but the comeback came up short as the winning run was stranded at second base.
USC Aiken falls to 11-13 this season while Barton improves to 13-12 overall. Tyler Petty finished two-for-three with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs for the Bulldogs.
Chris Sheehan went three-for-four with a run scored and two RBIs for the Pacers.
USCA jumped out to an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Sheehan drew a bases loaded walk to push across
Zach Cooper.
Barton College connected on five straights hits off USC Aiken starter
Peden Rucker to start the second inning. A single up the middle by Petty scored the first two Bulldog runs. David Kimball followed with a two-run home run over the left field fence. Another single chased Rucker from the game as the Pacers turned to
Chad McMurray to stop the bleeding. The next three batters reached off McMurray, including an RBI single by Justin Wilkes and an RBI double by Dennis Blackmon. Eric McInerny's sacrifice fly into center field plated the seventh and final run of the inning.
Eight players finished with one hit for BC. Petty was the lone Bulldog to record more than one hit.
An RBI single by
Daniel Quartararo in the bottom of the second and an RBI double by Sheehan in the third inning cut the Bulldog lead to 7-3.
Petty's solo shot to lead off the sixth inning put Barton in front 8-3. The Pacers picked up two in the bottom of the seventh to draw within in three. Back-to-back doubles by Sheehan and
Matthew Tripp to lead off the inning scored one run. Quartararo drove in the second with a ground out to get USC Aiken to within 8-5.
Quartararo finished with two hits in six at bats and three RBIs. Tripp went two-for-four with two runs scored and an RBI.
RBI singles by
Mike Cunningham and Quartararo in the bottom of the ninth closed the gap to 8-7 with two runners on. Cooper's sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position for
Ashley Farr but Matt Wingo got Farr to fly to left field to end the game.
The Pacers will return to action on Wednesday when they finish up the two-game series with Barton College. The first pitch at Roberto Hernandez Stadium is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.Â
