Pacers Split With Alderson-Broaddus

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C.--USC Aiken split a softball doubleheader with Alderson-Broaddus College tonight at Pacer Park in Aiken, S.C. The Lady Pacers lost game one, 1-0, in eight innings and won the nightcap 7-2. Jayme Durand went four-for-four in game two with an RBI and Jennifer Scott hit her team-leading seventh home run of the season. USCA moves to 14-13 in 2004 while the Lady Battlers fall to 2-4 overall.

Casey Kuhn gave Alderson-Broaddus an early lead in game two with an RBI single up the middle that scored Katie Roush.

The Lady Pacers came right back in the bottom half of the first and took the lead. Deidre Simmons led off the inning with an infield hit, stole second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Ashley Dyches drove in Simmons with another infield single. Dyches advanced to third on two errors and then scored on Durand's single into center field to give USC Aiken a 2-1 lead.

Dyches drove in another run in the bottom of the second and when Jami Cornwell scored on a wild pitch the Lady Pacers went ahead 4-1. Dyches finished the game with two hits in four at bats, a run scored and two RBIs.

After the Lady Battlers cut the lead to 4-2, Scott led off the bottom of the third inning with a solo blast over the left-center field wall. Her seventh home run of the season ties the junior first baseman for the Peach Belt Conference lead. Simmons drove in a run in the third inning as well as USC Aiken built a 6-2 lead.

Simmons would knock in the Lady Pacers' seventh run of the game in the fifth inning and finish with two hits in four at bats, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Kuhn went two-for-three for Alderson-Broaddus with an RBI. Roush had two hits in two at bats, a walk and a run scored.
The starting pitchers dominated game one. Samantha Blair struck out 10 in eight innings for USCA, allowed five hits and didn't walk a single batter. ABC's Casie Waskey struck out seven, walked one, allowed four hits and picked up the win after her team pushed across a run in the eighth inning.

With runners at second and third and one out, Sarah Paugh reached on an error and Jess Howell scored what would turn out to be the winning run. USC Aiken had the tying run at third base and the winning run at first with two outs in the bottom of the eighth but Waskey got Cornwell to ground to the shortstop who tossed over to second to get the force out and end the game.

The Lady Pacers will return to action on Friday when they begin play in the 2004 Francis Marion University Patriot Invitational. USC Aiken will play Coker College at 7:00 p.m., and Catawba College at 9:00 p.m. On Saturday, USCA will face Barton College at 1:00 p.m., St. Andrews at 3:00 p.m., and Mount Olive College at 7:00 p.m.
