LMU Pulls Out Late Win

Box Score AIKEN, SC--Lincoln Memorial (1-0) capitalized on four Pacer errors to plate five unearned runs en route to a 6-3 non-conference baseball win over USC Aiken (0-3) on a rainy Friday night at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. Originally scheduled for a 4:00 PM start, the game was moved back to 7:00 PM and then bumped to 7:30 before it began, only to witness a 45-minute rain delay prior to the first pitch.

Starter Steve Dunham worked a solid 5.0 innings in the no decision. He faced just one over the minimum through three innings and struck out the side in the third. Dunham allowed two unearned runs on two hits and six strikeouts.

Matt Meachen's sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth plated the game's first run. The play was set up by a fielding error on left fielder Ashley Farr. The Railsplitters pushed across one more in the fifth inning on a pair of errors by second baseman Daniel Quartararo

USC Aiken responded in the fifth with two on and two out. Bradley Key laced a 3-2 pitch to the gap in left center plating Brandon Barenie from third and Farr from first to knot the game up at 2-2. Key was thrown out trying to stretch the play into a triple by center fielder Patrick Boldon to end the inning. Boldon had a good night at the plate as well for LMU going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Tied 2-2 heading into the ninth inning, back-to-back single by Boldon and Johnson Whitehead followed by a walk to Barry Cunningham loaded the bases with one out. Wes Strader's sacrifice fly to center gave LMU the 3-2 lead. But an error by shortstop Tony Hanks extended the inning as three more Railsplitters would score to make it 6-2.

Freshman Zach Cooper got his first collegiate hit in the ninth, a double to right center, to bring around Quartararo and set the final margin at 6-3.

Strader pitched 5.0 innings allowing two unearned runs on four hits in the no decision. Andy Giffin (1-0) surrendered one earned run on two hits and five strikeouts in relief.

Wes McColl (0-1) relieved Dunham and gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits in taking the loss.
USC Aiken will host Lincoln Memorial in game two of their three-game series tomorrow at 1:00 PM.
