Pacers And Indians Split Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AIKEN, SC--USC Aiken (5-8) split a non-conference baseball doubleheader with Catawba College (10-8) on Saturday afternoon at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. The Indians posted a 5-0 shutout in game one while the Pacers returned the favor 2-0 in the nightcap. 

Freshman lefthander Thomas Wilson (2-2) struck out 15 Pacers en route to a complete game, shutout. Wilson allowed just three hits and two walks facing six batters over the minimum. 

Catawba plated their first run in the top of the first on a Jimbo Davis sacrifice fly to center field scoring Mark Smith. 

The Pacers got a two-out walk to Ashley Farr and a Bradley Key single in the bottom of the inning, but were unable to push across a run. 

Wilson faced just two over the minimum from the second inning until the seventh, retiring 11 straight at one period. Mike Cunningham tallied the Pacers' second hit of the game with a two-out single through the left side in the seventh. Farr added a single in the ninth. 

In the eighth, a walk and a hit batter put two on with two outs for the Indians. After Scott Searles' sac bunt advanced the runners, Steve Dunham intentionally walked the hot hitting Matt Baker to load the bases. Baker went 3-for-3 on the day. 

Dunham punched out Spence Southard for the second out, by Davis took a 3-2 pitch back up the middle to score Mark Smith and Jeff Boyles to make it 3-0.

Boyles homered to left field in the ninth to make it 5-0. It marked the first home run given up to an opposing team in Roberto Hernandez Stadium history and the first allowed by the Pacer pitching staff in 12 games this season. Davis finished with three RBI while Boyles had two RBI and two runs scored. 

Dunham (0-4) continued his streak of hard luck losses. In 8.0 innings of work, he allowed three runs, all earned, on six hits and three walks, striking out seven. Jamie Langford surrendered two earned runs on one hit and one walk in 1.0 inning of relief. 

In game two, USCA hurlers Derek Claussen and Wes McColl combined for the 2-0 shutout win. 

The Pacers got all the offense they would need in the second inning. Key doubled down the left field line and Hanks walked to put two on with one out. Justin Williams' one hopper to second baseman Scott Searles was misplayed and Key scored. Matt Tripp followed with an RBI through the left side to plate Hanks and make it 2-0. 

Claussen (1-1) tossed 6.0 innings of four-hit, shutout baseball, walking four and striking out five. McColl (1) allowed one hit in the seventh for his first save. 

Zach Snyder (2-2) gave up two unearned runs on four hits and four walks, striking out two in the loss for Catawba. 

USC Aiken, winners of three of their last four, will host Catawba on Sunday, February 29 at 1:00 PM in the finale of the three-game series.
