USC Aiken Falls In Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SPARTANBURG, SC--The USC Spartanburg Rifles (7-1, 2-0 PBC) got a pair of masterful pitching performances in less than perfect conditions to silence the USC Aiken (2-5, 0-2 PBC) offense and sweep the Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Harley Park. Sunday's final game of the series was rained out and re-scheduled for Monday at 3:00 PM.

In the opening game, Trevor Berryhill (2-1) tossed a complete game shutout for the Rifles. It marked just the fifth time in 305 PBC games that the Pacers were held scoreless. Berryhill scattered five hits and three walks over the full 9.0 innings, recording seven strikeouts in the win.

Derek Claussen (0-1) worked 5.0 innings for USC Aiken allowing two earned runs on five hits and one walk, striking out four. Peden Rucker tossed 3.0 innings of relief holding USCS to one unearned run on two hits.

The Rifles scored the game's first run in the bottom of the third inning when USCA was unable to turn a double play on Tyson Cross' ground ball to shortstop, scoring Bret Hansen on the fielder's choice.

USCS pushed across another run in the fifth as Hansen scored on a wild pitch after reaching base on an infield single. The game's final run came in the seventh as Hansen reached on a Tony Hanks' error and then later scored on an error by right fielder Brandon Barenie to make it 3-0.

Hansen finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored to lead USC Spartanburg. Chris Sheehan and Bob Hatcher each had doubles to lead USCA at the plate.

In game two, USCA managed just three hits, but were able to push across a run in the top of the sixth inning to make it a 2-1 ball game. Sheehan pinch hit for Ian Kowalchuk and singled to left field. After a passed ball advanced Sheehan to second, the Pacers could not advance him to third with the next two hitters. With two out, Daniel Quartararo singled to left field to plate Sheehan.
The Rifles got their two runs on two hits and a costly error in the fourth inning. With two on and two out, Adam Tesh reached on an error by Kowalchuk to keep the inning alive. Jim Maciejewski and John Caddell followed with back-to-back RBI singles to make it 2-0.

Steve Dunham (0-2) went the distance for the Pacers allowing two unearned runs on five hits and two walks, striking out six.

Jeff Jerome (1-0) worked 5.0 innings giving up one unearned run on one hit and four walks in picking up the win. Doc Godfrey worked 0.2 of an inning in the sixth before being lifted for closer Stan Smith (1). Smith held the Pacers scoreless allowing one hit over the final 1.1 innings for his first save.

The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Monday, February 16 at 3:00 PM. USC Spartanburg has never swept the series with USC Aiken since the formation of the PBC in 1992.
