Nola Grant's 18 points and eight rebounds led four Lady Pacers in double figures as USC Aiken (2-1) stunned Armstrong Atlantic State (1-2) 67-60 in the consolation bracket championship game of the Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic on Sunday afternoon in Orlando, Fla. USCA snapped a three-game losing streak to the Peach Belt Conference preseason favorite and picked up just the program's ninth win in the 25-game series history.
In USCA's only other visit to the Disney Tip-Off Classic in 2002, the Lady Pacers also went 2-1 and captured the consolation bracket championship after losing to a ranked team in the tournament opener.
The Lady Pacers dominated the glass, overcoming a poor first-half shooting performance (11-of-33) with a 37-19 edge on the boards. USCA finished with a 58-39 advantage in rebounds as
Lana Mandic and
Benazura Serbecic each posted double doubles.
AASU won the turnover battle 24-11, but shot just 31.0 percent from the field for the game (22-of-71) including 27.8 percent from deep (5-of-18) and 47.8 percent at the stripe (11-of-23).
USCA shot the ball much better in the second half connecting on 13-of-28 for 46.4 percent. The Lady Pacers were 2-of-9 from downtown for the game (22.2 percent) and 17-of-25 from the line (68.0 percent).
The first half featured five ties and eight lead changes as both teams struggled on offense. With AASU leading 24-23 with 3:07 on the clock, Grant's three-point play gave USCA the lead 26-24 as they took a 28-26 edge at the break. The junior from Aiken, S.C. was 8-of-14 from the field and 2-of-2 at the line for 18 points to go with eight boards and one block in 26 minutes.
Ashley Mason hit a lay-up with 15:29 remaining to give AASU its largest second half advantage at 36-32, but
Mindy Allee drilled a three-pointer and then drained two charity tosses to cut the margin to 36-35.
Trailing 47-45 with 6:37 remaining in the game, the Lady Pacers converted five of their next six shots from the field to bolt out in front 55-49 with 3:36 on the clock. Two Lavonne Thomas' free throws trimmed the margin to a single possession at 57-54 with 2:22 to play, but Allee hit Serbecic on a backdoor cut as the Lady Pacers went on for the 67-60 win.
Mandic had 10 points on 5-of-12 shooting to go with 10 rebounds while Serbecic was 5-of-8 from the field for 12 points and 10 boards. Allee added 11 points and a game-high four assists.
Thomas had 17 points on 7-of-16 shooting for the Lady Pirates. Jasmine Herron drained 4-of-8 triples for 15 points while Audosha Kelley turned in a double double with 11 points and 10 boards.
USC Aiken will have nine days to prepare for their next game on November 16 at Newberry College at 7:00 PM.
