Box Score 3 JACKSONVILLE, FL--The USC Aiken Pacers (28-22, 11-15 PBC) took the series finale with fifth-ranked North Florida (32-13, 16-8 PBC) to spoil the Ospreys' bid at a sweep in Peach Belt Conference baseball this weekend at Harmon Stadium in Jacksonville, FL. UNF won game one 5-3 and game two 9-1 before the Pacers captured game three 5-1.
As a team, the Pacers hit a frigid .250, more than 78 points below their normal team batting average. The pitching, however, posted better than normal number with a 2.74 ERA, holding the Ospreys to just a .225 batting average. But the story of the series was the fielding problems by the Pacers. USCA committed 11 errors in three games for a .908 fielding percentage as opposed to UNF's one error all weekend. In game one, the Pacers committed a school record nine errors, eclipsing the previous mark of eight set on April 20, 1993 versus Western Carolina.
In the series opener, trailing 2-0,
Ashley Farr doubled down the left field line and
Demetrick Drumming blasted a two-run homer to left field to knot it up at 2-2. For
Drumming, it was his 13th long ball of the season.
UNF reclaimed the advantage in the sixth after
Matt Oxendine led off with a double and two Pacer errors resulted in an unearned run. The Pacers responded in their next at bat when
Leroy
Walker singled with one out and came around to score on a
Farr RBI single to tie it at 3-3.
The Pacers' defense really came unraveled in the last two innings. USCA committed two errors in the seventh and three more miscues in the eighth as North Florida plated one unearned run in each inning to win 5-3.
For the game,
Farr was 3-for-3 and
Drumming finished 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Clint Keown was 1-for-4 and stole base number 41 on the season, one shy of
Adam Riggs' 1993 record of 42.
Wes McColl (7-5) went the distance for USCA scattering eight hits and one walk, striking out two, and allowing three earned runs in the loss.
Brian Rauch (7-2) surrendered three earned runs on eight hits and three walks, striking out eight in the win.
Justin Cerrato (10) did not allow a baserunner over the final 2.0 innings, striking out three in the save.
In Saturday's first of a twinbill, North Florida jumped on the Pacers early and they never got the bats going. USCA plated its only run of the game in the fourth inning when
Drumming poked a two-out single to left field and
Chris Sheehan doubled down the left field line to score him and make it 5-1.
Drumming was the only Pacer with more than one hit as he went 2-for-4.
Keown,
Sheehan, and
Casey Calhoun had the other hits for the Pacers.
The Ospreys got all their runs off freshman starter
Chris Wilson, making just his second career start.
Wilson (0-1) allowed five runs, three earned, on four hits and two walks in 2.0 innings.
Harold Sofield did not allow a hit or a run, walking three in one inning of relief while
Chad McMurray scattered six hits but held UNF scoreless in 5.0 innings of work.
Ryan Knight led the Ospreys on offense going 3-for-5 at the plate and scoring two runs.
Joseph Russell was 1-for-4 but had two of the three UNF RBI.
Robert Burris (7-2) tossed a five-hit, complete game in the win. He allowed just the one earned run, striking out eight and walking four.
In the seven-game nightcap on Saturday, the USC Aiken offense finally erupted for nine runs on 11 hits for the 9-1 win. USCA plated five in the third inning and added four more in the fifth.
Starter
Nick Wandless (5-2) picked up his fifth win of the season allowing just one earned run on one hit and two walks, striking out one.
Mike Pomaville worked the seventh to close it out for the Pacers as the two hurlers combined for a two-hitter.
Farr,
Bradley Key, and
Brandon Beaulieu each tallied two hits to lead the Pacers.
Farr drove in a team-high three RBI and had two doubles while
Key also had a two-bagger.
Knight and
Jason Kracunas had the only two hits for North Florida.
Jacob Dixon (5-3) lasted just 2.2 innings for North Florida giving up five runs, three earned, on six hits and two strikeouts in the loss.
Billy Layman was not much more effective in the relief allowing four earned runs on five hits in 2.0 innings of work.
Derek Feldmandid cool off the Pacer bats over the final 2.1 innings, holding USCA scoreless and hitless.
USC Aiken returns home to close out the 2003 season. On Wednesday, the Pacers will open their season-ending home stand with a non-conference game against Brevard College at 6:30 PM.
