Hanks' Homer Lifts Pacers To Win

Box Score AIKEN, SC--USC Aiken shortstop Tony Hanks took a 2-0 pitch over the left center field fence to break a 3-3 tie and lift the Pacers (26-20) to the 4-3 win over Newberry College (20-26) on Tuesday night at J.H. Satcher Field in non-conference baseball action.  The Pacers defeated the Indians for the seventh-straight time.

Both teams opened by plating two runs in the first inning.  For the Indians, Gilmore Stevens singled and later scored on a failed pickoff attempt at first base to make it 1-0.  Billy Alm then made it 2-0 when he smacked a two-out double to left field scoring Carlos Gonzalez.

USCA got both runs back in the bottom of the first as Clint Keown singled through the right side, stole second and third base, and then scored on an error by the catcher.  Demetrick Drumming tacked on a sacrifice fly plating Ashley Farr to knot it up at 2-2. Keown finished 3-for-5 with one RBI, one run scored, and three stolen bases.

In the second, Bobby Locke hit a two-out, solo homer to left center to push the Indians back in front 3-2.

But again the Pacers answered in their half of the inning as Keown doubled to right center scoring Leroy Walker.  Walker was 2-for-3 while HanksChris Sheehan, and Casey Calhoun each had a hit for USCA.

After combining for six runs in two innings, the only run given up the remainder of the way was Hanks' homer.  He now has 12 on the season to lead the team and is among the tops in the Peach Belt Conference.

Paul Ferrell (4-2) worked 7.0 effective innings for the Pacers scattering 10 hits, allowing three runs, one earned, on no walks and two strikeouts.  Nick Wandless worked a perfect eighth while Mike Pomaville (3) picked up his third save in the ninth.

Stevens paced Newberry going 3-for-5 at the plate.  Gonzalez was 2-for-3 with one run scored.

Chris Griffin (0-5) remained winless on the season after tossing 6.1 innings allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits and five walks, striking out three.  Jamie Maynes pitched the final 1.2 innings holding USCA to one hit, walking one and recording three strikeouts.

USC Aiken will host North Greenville tomorrow, Wednesday at 6:30 PM.   Newberry returns home to square off against Anderson College, also tomorrow, with first pitch set for 6:00 PM.
