BEAUFORT, S.C.—USC Aiken's women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday by defeating Queens University of Charlotte, 6-3, in Beaufort, S.C. The Lady Pacers improve to 1-3 overall in 2003.
USCA dominated number one singles and doubles play.
Maria Claudia Romo downed Kelly Bryant, 6-0 and 6-0. Then
Romo teamed with
Nicole Copp to defeat Bryant and Katie Stroud, 8-0, on the doubles side.
Other Lady Pacer winners on the singles side included
Dominique Cassetori,
Erika Eles and
Copp.
Cassetori and
Eles also defeated Aicha Ghys and Sarah Jones, 8-4, in number two doubles competition.
Two of Queens' wins were a result of defaults by USC Aiken. Due to injuries, the Lady Pacers didn't have enough players to compete in all nine matches.
USC Aiken's matches with Northern Kentucky, scheduled for this past Thursday in Aiken, and with Armstrong Atlantic State, scheduled for Friday in Savannah, Ga., were both cancelled due to rain.
The Lady Pacers will return to action on Sunday as they participate in spring break competition in Hilton Head, S.C.
