Box Score PEMBROKE, N.C.--USC Aiken won for the second time in three games after knocking off UNC Pembroke, 71-54, Wednesday in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action in Pembroke, N.C.
Bryant Latimer led USCA and set a career high with 26 points. The Pacers improve to 4-20 on the season and 3-13 in the Peach Belt Conference. UNCP remains winless on the season, the Braves fall to 0-24 overall and 0-16 in conference play.
After Desi Crisp gave UNC Pembroke a three-point lead, 8-5, with 16:06 left in the first half, the Pacers went on an 18-0 run to take control of the game.
Latimer began the run with two free throws and a three-pointer to give USC Aiken the lead for good, 10-8, with 14:56 to play in the first.
Lee Burton's jumper capped the run and put USCA out in front 23-8 with 11:15 before intermission.
Latimer hit eight-of-14 shots from the field, including five-of-six from behind the three-point line, and all five of his free throws for a career high 26 points. The junior transfer from Winthrop added two rebounds, three assists and two steals.
The Braves answered with a 13-2 run of their own to get back within four points, 25-21, with 5:03 before halftime. USC Aiken outscored UNCP 9-2 over the final four and a half minutes of the half to take an 11-point lead, 34-23, into the locker room.
Pembroke began the second half with a 13-7 run and Rico Odom's jumper closed the gap to five points, 41-36, with 14:46 to play. The Braves would get no closer. Odom finished with a team-high 13 points on five-of-seven shooting from the field and 12 rebounds.
Todd Williams' basket with 7:49 on the clock gave the Pacers a 12-point lead, 54-42. That bucket began what turned out to be a 15-2 run that gave USC Aiken its largest lead of the game, 25 points, 69-44, with just over three minutes remaining. Williams finished with six points, a team-high eight rebounds and two blocked shots.
Both teams shot nearly 43 percent from the field for the game, but the Pacers connected on 10-of-19 three-pointers for 52.6 percent. UNCP hit on just four-of-12 from behind the arch for 33.3 percent. The Braves held a 33-32 advantage on the boards.
Next up for the Pacers is a match-up with USC Spartanburg at "The Courthouse" in Aiken, S.C., on Saturday. The Rifles are holding down the second spot in the PBC's North Division. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
