Box Score 2 MILLEDGEVILLE, GA--The 19th ranked USC Aiken Pacers (4-5, 0-2 PBC) let two leads slip through their hands as the 13th ranked Georgia College & State University Bobcats (7-2, 2-0 PBC) took both halves of Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader 7-5 and 6-5 on Saturday afternoon at John Kurtz Field.
In game one, the Pacers wasted 6.0 strong innings from ace
Mike Pomaville in the 7-5 loss.
Pomaville (2-1) tossed six innings of shutout baseball until he ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth.
Jason Samples led off with a home run to center field to cut the Pacer lead to 3-1.
Ron Womack then doubled to left center and
Jose Leger homered to left field to tie the game at 3-3.
Trouble continued in the seventh when the Bobcats plated three more runs on two hits to take a 6-3 lead.
Trailing 7-3 in the ninth, the Pacers did not go quietly.
Demetrick Drumming (4) led off the inning with his second home run of the game, this one a solo shot to right center.
Ashley Farr (2) followed with a blast to left field, cutting the margin to 7-5. But
Tony Hanksand
Leroy Walker struck out and
Mike Cunningham grounded to second to end the game.
Matt Goyen (2-0) worked 8.0 innings allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits while striking out eight and walking three in the win for GC&SU.
In game two, the Pacers took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the sixth before surrendering one in the sixth and one in the seventh to fall 6-5.
GC&SU opened the game with four runs in the bottom of the first. The big blow was a two RBI single
Jamie Langham that plated
Matt Nixon and
Leger. The Bobcats scored their four runs on four hits and one Pacer error.
After getting back one in the third on an RBI single by
Clint Keown scoring
Cunningham, USCA rallied with four in the top of the sixth.
Walker doubled home
Hanks and
Farr and then
Cunningham tripled to right field to plate
Walker.
Cunningham then scored on a wild pitch by
Brett Newton.
One run in the bottom of the sixth tied the game and then
Ron Womack scored on a throwing error by
Adam Strongman as the Bobcats executed the double steal.
Wes McColl worked just 1.0 inning allowing four earned runs on four hits and one walk in the no decision.
Harold Sofield tossed 4.0 innings of one hit, shutout baseball.
Bradley Key (0-1) saw 1.1 innings of work allowing two unearned runs on four walks in the loss.
Hanks,
Keown, and
Cunningham each had two hits for the Pacers.
Michael Buck (1-0) worked two-thirds of an inning for the win for GC&SU.
Both teams will square off in the final game of the series on Sunday, February 16 at 1:00 PM. USCA is trying to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Bobcats for the third straight year.
