Seven-Run Ninth Leads Pacers Past Jags

Box Score AUGUSTA, GA--The USC Aiken Pacers (30-14, 12-9 PBC) continued their flair for the dramatic scoring seven runs in the ninth inning on Saturday afternoon to pick up the 11-8 Peach Belt Conference win over 22nd ranked Augusta State (25-16, 10-11 PBC).  For the Pacers, currently ranked 30th in Division II, it was their sixth-straight win over the rival Jaguars and on the season USCA has won seven-in-a-row and 11 of its last 12.

Neither team was able to score until the bottom of the third inning when ASU got an RBI single from Matt May and a sacrifice fly from Sam Barth to claim a 2-0 lead.  USCA, however, posted a three-spot in the top of the fourth following a Bradley Key RBI single and a two-RBI double by Tony Hanks.  Key, a top contender for PBC Freshman of the Year honors, went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Over the next four and one-half innings, Augusta State outscored the Pacers 6-3 to take an 8-4 lead into the final inning.  Following a walk to Micheal SnelgroveLeroy Walker went down swinging for out number one.  Ashley Morgan singled and Tavis Cummings drew a walk to load the bases for Pacer slugger Demetrick Drumming.  He delivered a two-RBI single to cut it to 8-6. Ashley Farr singled up the middle to score Cummings and reduce the lead to a single run at 8-7.  Key then popped up to second baseman Wayne Dean for out number two.

Down to their final out, Hanks singled to score Drumming and knot the game at 8-8.  Kyle Langley then doubled to right center scoring Farr and Hanks for the game winning runs.

Paul Ferrell went 3.1 innings on the mound for USCA allowing four earned runs on three hits and three walks in the no decision.  Lee Cromer and Matt Ockuly worked the next 2.2 innings surrendering three runs, one earned, on five hits. Chad McMurray (4-1) tossed a perfect seventh and eighth inning striking out one to pick up the win.  David Caison (2), the winner of game one yesterday, held the Jags in the ninth for his second save of the season.

Augi Rodriguez (5-3) went 5.1 innings in relief of starter Ricky Buffkin allowing eight earned runs on nine hits and three walks in the loss.

The Pacers return home to J.H. Satcher Field for nine of their final 12 games starting with a non-conference game with Anderson College on Tuesday, April 9 at 6:00 PM.
