Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, GA--Trailing heading into the final two innings of both games, the 30th ranked USC Aiken Pacers (29-14, 11-9 PBC) rallied to take both ends of a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader at 22nd ranked Augusta State (25-15, 10-10 PBC) on Saturday afternoon. USCA improved to 34-10 all-time versus the rival Jaguars including five-straight in the series. On the season, the Pacers have won six in a row and 10 of their last 11.
In game one, ASU grabbed a 3-0 lead heading into the top of the sixth before the Pacers finally got on the board. Following a
Tavis Cummings fly out,
Demetrick Drumming doubled to center field and
Ashley Farr hit his 12th home run of the year to make it 3-2.
Ashley Morgan doubled home
Tony
Hanks with two outs to knot the game at 3-3.
The Jags, however, wasted no time in reclaiming the lead. In their next at bat,
Andre Hanks homered to lead off the seventh inning.
Wayne Dean's RBI single extended the margin to 5-3.
Drumming homered in the eighth to make it 5-5. The long ball was his 14th of the season, tying the single season school record held jointly by
Adam Riggs (1994) and
David Gillespie (2001).
In the bottom of the eighth,
Hanks drew a bases loaded walk and seemingly scored the winning run as ASU took a 6-5 lead into the ninth. The Pacers, however, roared back with four runs on four hits to claim the 9-6 win.
Jason Nuzny went 7.0 innings for the Pacers scattering nine hits and one walk while striking out eight. He allowed five runs, but just three earned, in the no decision.
Matt Ockuly pitched to five batters in the eighth walking three and fanning one.
David Caison (3-0) got his team out of a jam in the eighth and worked a perfect ninth to pick up the win.
In the nightcap, USCA again trailed late, down 3-2 heading into the sixth of the seven-inning game.
Drumming led off with a double and
Farr drew a walk.
Bradley Key hit into a fielder's choice resulting in
Drumming being out at third base. But
Hanks doubled home
Farr to tie the game at 3-3.
Key later scored the go ahead run on an error by Jags' shortstop
John Graham.
For good measure, USCA tacked on four more in the seventh to win going away 8-3.
Drumming belted a two-run blast in the seventh to give him 15 homers on the season, setting the new single season mark at USCA. The junior slugger from Aiken, SC, has 13 games remaining on the 2002 season to add to that mark.
Drumming finished 3-for-3 while
Morgan,
Cummings,
Farr,
Hanks, and
Micheal Snelgrove each recorded two-hit outings.
Mitch Hearne (5-0) tossed 2.2 innings of one-hit, shutout baseball in relief of
Anthony Marchioli and
Lee Cromer to pick up his fifth win of the season.
The Jags went with their ace in
Marty Bruce (7-1), but he was rocked for six runs on 12 hits, walking three and striking out three. It was the first loss for Bruce in eight decisions this season.
USCA and Augusta State will meet on Sunday, April 7 at 2:00 PM in the final game of the series.
