JACKSONVILLE, FL— The USCA tennis teams opened the 2002 Peach Belt Conference Tournament, splitting its two opening round matches.  The Lady Pacers defeated Francis Marion 5-1 in the first match of the day, while the Pacers lost to Augusta State 5-1 in the third match of the day.  The Lady Pacers (11-9) move on to face top-seeded Armstrong Atlantic State later this afternoon.  The Pacers (8-11) will face the loser of USC Spartanburg/Armstong Atlantic State at 5:00 p.m. this afternoon. 
  
The Lady Pacers began the day taking two out of the three doubles matches from the Lady Patriots.  At number one, Maria Paula Arcos and Lane Matheny won their match 8-2, while Lexi McCarty and Roxanna Mazsa won 9-7.  FMU's Ana Carias and Kristen Kern scored the lone Patriots' point as they defeated Maria Claudia Romo and Erika Eles 8-6 at the No. 2 position. 
  
In singles action, USCA then took straight set wins at Nos. 2, 3 and 4 to give the Pacers a 5-1 victory. The Lady Pacers will get a quick breather, before facing No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic State later this afternoon. 
  
On the men's side, USCA dropped a 5-1 decision to Augusta State in the eight/nine opening round matchup.  The lone Pacer win came in doubles at No. 1 as Kiril Popov and Will Elliott won their match 8-6.  The Jaguars (11-9) took the other two doubles matches, one of which by forfeit. 
  
In singles, Matt Broomhead lost to his opponent (2-6, 1-6) and Iro Petris fell (1-6, 0-6), giving the Jaguars the decisive five points.  USCA had to forfeit its sixth singles position. 
  
The Pacers will face the Armstrong Atlantic State/USC Spartanburg loser in the Consolation Bracket at 5:00 p.m., this afternoon.
