Box Score 2 KENNESAW, GA--After making a valiant comeback in the latter stages of the first game last night, the Pacers took No. 6 Kennesaw State to extra innings in the first game of a twinbill against the Owls. The Pacers (17-11, 5-7 PBC) dropped the first game 7-6 in ten innings and lost the nightcap 5-3.
USCA took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a ground out RBI by
Demetrick Drumming, scoring
Leroy Walker from third. Kennesaw State (18-4, 10-2 PBC) came right back in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff home run by
Travis Evans off Pacer hurler
Paul Ferrell.
The Owls scored two more runs in the second and third innings, building a 3-2 lead. The Pacers tallied two runs in the top of the fourth on a two-RBI single by
Kyle Langley, taking a 4-3 lead.
KSU tied the game in the sixth inning on a double by
Donny Hood. USCA came back again in the top of the seventh with two runs, taking a 6-4 lead.
The first run came on a sacrifice bunt by
Ashley Farr, scoring
Drumming from third. The go-ahead run came on a double to left field by
Tony Hanks.
The Pacer lead did not last long as KSU battled back in the bottom of the seventh frame for two runs, tying the game once again. The Pacers brought in
Anthony Marchioli in relief of Ferrell who went five and one-third innings, allowing eight hits, four runs, three earned and two strikeouts.
Neither team could produce a run in the last two innings. The Pacers had a chance to take the lead in the ninth as
Drumming reached second base, but was picked-off and then
Bradley Key hit into a double play to end the inning.
KSU's ninth ended the same way as the Pacers' ninth ended as USCA turned the key twin-killing to end the Owls hopes of winning the game in regulation.
USCA was unable to score in the tenth inning, bringing KSU up with a chance to win the game.
Josh Pellior came through for KSU again, knocking in the winning run on a single down the right field line off Pacer pitcher
Matt Ockuly (1-1).
Game two began with KSU jumping out to a 4-0 lead on the Pacers and pitcher
Key. A two-run home run by Hood in the third highlighted the early output by the Owls.
???????USCA cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth as
Langley doubled to center field and two batters later,
Farr doubled to right field, scoring
Langley and
Tavis Cummings who reached base courtesy of a
John Robbins walk.
The Owls scored the fifth run of the game in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single to center field by
Lloyd Turner. Key (0-2) left the game after the inning as
Chad McMurray and
David Caison came in and pitched the final two innings respectively. Both pitchers shut down the Owls the rest of the way. However, the Pacer bats were unable to overcome the deficit.
The Pacers scored the final run of the game in the top of the sixth inning on a single by
Key to center field. That was all the Pacers could muster, falling
5-3.
