Box Score AIKEN, SC--The USC Aiken baseball team (9-6) needed extra innings to upend Brevard College (6-15) 16-12 in a non-conference matchup at J.H. Satcher Field. The Tornados roared out to a 12-4 lead, but the Pacers battled back, scoring the tying run in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.
Brevard jumped out to a 7-0 lead through the first three innings of the game. Pacer hurler
Paul Sofield lasted two-and-one-third innings, allowing five hits, seven runs, five earned and two walks.
The Pacers began their comeback in the bottom of the third with four-run inning. A RBI single by
Kyle Langley put the Pacers on the board. A two run single by
Tavis Cummings followed as the ball got past the Brevard right fielder and rolled all the way to the fence.
Cummings advanced to third on the error and later scored as the fourth run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by
Demetrick Drumming.
Brevard added five more runs in the next three innings, but USCA came back in the bottom of the sixth with another four run output to cut the deficit to 12-8. A bases loaded walk by
Casey Calhoun got things started in the inning. A two out double by
Leroy Walkerwas the highlight of the inning as two runs scored cutting the deficit to four.
With the four runs in the sixth, the Pacers scored the final 12 runs of the game. USCA tallied three more in the seventh to cut the deficit to one run heading down the stretch.
Drumming sent a double down the left field line to score all three runs in the inning.
Things looked promising for the Tornados in the bottom of the ninth as
Chad Nance retired the first two batters for the Pacers leading 12-11. However, things were about to change.
After an intentional walk was issued to
Michael Snelgrove, a pinch-hit triple by
Justin Williams tied the game at 12 and sent the contest into extra innings.
Brevard looked as if it was going to score in the top of the 10th as it had a runner only 90 feet away. However, Pacer head coach
Kenny Thomas went to his bullpen and brought in
David Caison for
Chad McMurray.
Caison forced the next batter to pop-up for the third out of the inning.
The Pacers went down in order in their half of the tenth, sending the game to the 11th inning.
Brevard was retired in order in the 11th, giving the Pacers the opportunity to close the deal. And that is exactly what they did.

Snelgrove was intentionally walked for the second time as Tornado hurler
Chad Nance wanted to get Brevard into a possible double play situation.
Walker fanned bringing
Ronnie Davis to the plate with two down in the inning.
Davis had his first collegiate hit earlier in the game.
After falling behind 0-and-2,
Davis battled back and drew a walk to load the bases.
Sean Tiernan stepped to the plate and crushed a grand slam to win the game.
The Pacers will return to conference action tomorrow with a double header against Francis Marion, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at Satcher Field. On Saturday, the Patriots and Pacers will conclude a three-game series at 1:00 p.m.
