AIKEN, SC—The USC Aiken tennis teams cruised to a pair of victories over Catawba on Sunday. Earlier in the day, the women's team lost a Peach Belt Contest to Clayton State. That match was shortened due to rain. The men evened their record at 1-1 overall and are 0-1 in conference play. The women improve to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the PBC.
In women's play, USCA won two of the three doubles matches against Catawba.
Lexi McCarty and
Roxanne Masza posted an 8-3 victory over
Bailey Gainey and
Rachael Morgan. The four-five match saw an exciting 8-6 victory by the Pacers as
Erika Eles and
Lane Matheny pulled out an 8-6 victory over their opponents. Catawba won the battle of the No. 1's with an 8-2 victory over
Maria Claudia Romo and
Maria Paula Arcos. On the singles side, the Pacers won five-of-six matches, as
Rachelle Osmun was the only Pacer to lose in singles play, 4-6, 0-6.
On the men's side, the Pacers also won 7-2. They won two of the three doubles matches and five-of-six singles matches.
Will Elliottand
Bosko Petricevic hung on for a 9-8 victory in their match, while
Kiril Popov and
Joerg Neubauer won 8-4. Catawba took the final doubles match with an 8-1 victory over
Will Thurmond and
Matt Broomhead. The Pacers won singles play highlighted by a 6-1, 6-1 victory by Petricevic. The final singles match of the day went three sets with
Elliott pulling out a come-from-behind victory over
Eric Noll, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
The Pacers return to action this Friday against Kennesaw State at 3:00 p.m. The men and women's teams will host Columbus State on Saturday beginning at 2:00 p.m.
