Duo Keys Pacers' Win Over Vikings

Box Score ORLANDO, FLA.--The seventh ranked USC Aiken Lady Pacers (1-1) got 16 points from newcomer Sarah Kendrick and 15 points from senior Jami Cornwell to defeat Augustana College (0-2) 70-62 in the second round of the Sixth Annual Disney Tip-Off Classic in Orlando, FL.  USCA head coach Mike Brandt picked up his first NCAA win.

Four points by Cornwell in the opening 6:30 helped the Lady Pacers to 12-6 lead.  But a scoreless streak of 4:55 would follow and the Vikings charged ahead 17-12 behind an 11-0 run.  Another newcomer, junior Katie Mitchell, ended the drought with a lay-up with 6:28 left until halftime.

In the final six minutes, there were four lead changes, four ties, and no team held more than a two-point advantage.  Erica Larsen's lay-up with 6.4 seconds remaining set the halftime score at 29-29.

Buckets by Allison Nold and Jen Kennedy out of the gate in the second half gave USCA a 33-29 lead that they would never relinquish.  On two occasions at 39-38 with 12:21 left and at 41-40 with 11:26 on the clock, Augustana got within one point.  But a 10-4 run over the next 3:33 pushed the USCA cushion to seven points.

Larsen hit a jumper with 5:02 left to push the advantage to 13 at 59-46, the Lady Pacers largest of the game to that point.  Two free throws by Kendrick with 1:01 to play made it 68-54.  Jessica Dickey and Katie Krauth hit back-to-back three-pointers inside of 40 seconds to play to make the score more respectable at 70-62.

After shooting a frigid 35.5 percent in the first half on 11-of-31 shooting, the Lady Pacers heated up to 52.4 percent in the second half on 11-of-21 from the field.  Julie Szabo hit the team's only three pointer.  She finished with seven points.

Down the stretch, as the Vikings tried to creep back in the game, USCA closed the door at the charity stripe, hitting 18-of-20 in the second half and shooting 80.0 percent for the game.

Cornwell added six rebounds and six assists while Kendrick pulled down eight boards.  Kennedy added 10 points.

Brenna Rollie was the high-point scorer for the Vikings with 16 on 5-of-9 shooting including 4-of-7 from downtown.  Laura Hensley added 12 points, but only three in the second half.  Joanna Naumann grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

As a team, the Vikings shot 38.3 percent from the field, 24.1 percent from deep, and were 9-of-18 at the stripe.
USC Aiken will play tomorrow at 1:00 PM in the championship of the consolation bracket in the Disney Tip-Off Classic.  They will face the winner of the Saint Leo and Findlay.
