Box Score FLORENCE, SC--USC Aiken fell to eighth ranked USC Spartanburg, 4-0, today in the semifinals of the 2002 Peach Belt Conference Men's Soccer Tournament at Francis Marion University in Florence, S.C. With the victory, the third seeded Rifles will shoot into Saturday's championship game and will face the winner of the Francis Marion/Lander University game. The seventh seeded Pacers conclude their season with a 7-10-1 overall record, while USCS moves to 17-2 in 2002.
USC Spartanburg's duo of Preben Ringerike and Jorge Atehortua did the Pacer in. Atehortua had three shots, two shots on goal, one goal and two assists. Ringerike had two shots, two shots on goal and two goals.
Atehortua's goal, from 12 yards out, just over six minutes into the game put the Rifles ahead 1-0. Spartanburg put another goal on the scoreboard 22 minutes later when Ringerike beat Pacer goalkeeper
Peter Calabrese from the left side for his first goal of the game and a 2-0 halftime lead.
Calabrese played 90 minutes in goal for USC Aiken. The junior allowed four goals, faced 10 shots on goal and came up with six saves.
The number of shots by the two teams in the first period was nearly even, with the Rifles holding a 5-4 advantage.
With the Pacers looking to get back into the game, Ringerike added his second goal of the game 11 minutes into the second period. The junior scored off a long pass from Rory Scovel to Atehortua and a cross from Atehortua to Ringerike for the goal.
For the game USCA was out shot by the Rifles 14-12. Senior
Haroon Saleem led the Pacers with three shots.
John Rousseau played in net for the Rifles. He earned the shutout by stopping all six USC Aiken shots on goal.
