AIKEN, SC--The 20th ranked USC Aiken Pacers (20-3, 3-3 in PBC) got their biggest win of the season with a 5-4 upset win over 10th ranked Francis Marion (9-7, 5-2 in PBC) on Thursday afternoon in Aiken, SC in men's Peach Belt Conference tennis. In women's PBC tennis action, the Lady Pacers (14-9, 1-6 in PBC) dropped a 5-4 decision to #28 Francis Marion (3-9, 3-5 in PBC).
FMU is coming off an upset of their own, a 6-3 victory over #4 Armstrong Atlantic State University. The Pacers grabbed a 2-1 lead at the completion of doubles play taking the No. 1 and No. 2 matches.
Bosko Petricevic / Paulus Halim defeated
Mark Bube / Sollie Nortje 9-7 in the No. 1 match. In the No. 2 doubles match,
Nils Gruetzmacher / Christian Weber knocked off
Glynn Hulley /
Lewellyn King 8-3. The Patriots duo of
Laszlo Leiter / Richard Warrin beat
Shaun Rinaman / Will Elliott 8-5.
In singles action,
Petricevic pulled the upset of
Bube 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 in the top seeded match.
Rinaman beat
Nortje 7-6, 6-4 at the No. 4 position while
Elliott pulled off the win over
Warrin 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 6 match which proved to be the match winner.
In the women's match, it was Francis Marion taking two of three doubles matches and splitting the six singles contests to eke out the 5-4 win. USCA's top-seeded doubles team of
Roxanne Mazsa / Alexis McCarty defeated
Stefanie Schaller / Stephanie Bush 9-7 for the Lady Pacers lone doubles win.
The Patriots took the top three singles matches with the Lady Pacers claiming singles matches four through six. The final match of the day was
Erika Eles and
Bush in the No. 3 singles match.
After
Bush won the first set 6-4,
Eles fought back to take set two 7-5. In the third and deciding set, it was
Bush winning 7-6 and clinching the match for FMU.
Both USCA tennis teams return to action on Saturday, April 7 when they travel to Columbus, GA to take on Columbus State University at 1:00 PM.
