AIKEN, S.C. – University of South Carolina Aiken men’s tennis standout Antonio Sabugueiro has been named the South Carolina Education Lottery USC Aiken Student-Athlete of the Month for April.

Sabugueiro, a junior from Sintra, Portugal, guided the Pacers to a 5-1 mark in the month and a No. 4 national ranking.

In doubles action, he teamed up with Salvador Bandeira to go 4-2 for the month. After dropping a 7-6 decision to Georgia College, the duo posed victories over Young Harris, North Georgia, Augusta and Flagler before falling to the No. 1 team in the nation.

The second-team all-conference performer went 5-1 at No. 3 singles in the month. Sabugueiro won each of his matches in two sets with the exception of the win over Flagler. His three-set win over the Saints sent USC Aiken to the PBC Championship for the first time since 2009.

Sabugeiro is nationally ranked in singles and doubles action and helped guide the team to a 16-3 record on the year as well as a second-place finish in the PBC with a 7-2 mark.

The South Carolina Education Lottery USC Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Month award honors one student-athlete each month from an in-season sport for their hard work and effort. Each month during the 2018-19 athletic year one winner will be chosen from an in-season sport.
