AIKEN, S.C. – Former USCA golf All-American Roberto Diaz recently qualified for the 125th U.S. Open.

The four-year standout from Veracruz, Mexico, tied for second at the U.S. Open Final Qualifying in Summit, N.J. There, Diaz posted scores of 65-71 for a two-day total of 136.

He tied Chris Gotterup and was one stroke off James Nicholas' two-round 135.

Diaz was one of four that qualified at the Canoe Brook Country Club. The fourth was amateur Benjamin James, who wrapped up the tournament with a 36-hole 137.

Diaz concluded his career under head coach Michael Carlisle by earning all-conference, all-region and All-America honors four times.

Diaz began his career as a Pacer during the 2005-06 season where he turned in a 73.37 scoring average while being named a third-team All-American by PING. That year, he was tabbed to the NCAA Division II All-Freshman Team and was named the PBC Freshman of the Year. As a sophomore, Diaz notched a 73.59 stroke average and picked up honorable mention All-America honors.

Diaz posted a 73.05 stroke average as a junior and garnered second-team All-America accolades. Diaz accounted for second-team All-America honors as a senior in 2009 after recording a 71.90 stroke average.

He currently has the sixth-best career scoring average in school history (72.97). During his time with the Pacers, Diaz won four tournaments, which is tied for fourth most in school history. His low round of 64 is the second-best single-round effort in school history.

Diaz, who helped lead USCA to a national championship as a freshman, was inducted into the Randy Warrick Hall of Fame in 2018.
