Each week, USCA will post notes.
Blayne's Big Day
Blayne Newman has been impressive all season. He leads the team with 52 strikeouts after posting nine in the series-opening victory over Georgia Southwestern. Last week, he was sixth nationally in strikeouts with 43 in just 24 innings of work. He was six strikeouts behind the national leader, who had 49 strikeouts in 33 innings of work.
First And Last
In the opener against Georgia Southwestern,
Hunter Thompson started things off with an RBI single in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Up 3-1 in the eighth, he promptly took the first pitch he saw and crushed the offering over the right field wall. His home run marked the fourth run for the team – and it turned out to be the game-winning run as well.
He Does It All
Josh Sharp has had a storied career and he makes everything look easy. He turned in another impressive feat on Saturday, rattling off four hits while scoring four times against GSW. He turned in his eighth triple of the season, doubling his career output heading into the season (eight). This year, over half of his hits have been for extra bases (five doubles, eight triples and three home runs) on 31 hits.
Ashley's Solid Performance
Damien Ashley turned in a solid effort over the weekend. He saw time in three games, working 7.1 innings over a three-day span. He gave up just four hits and struck out six without giving up a run. Ashley picked up a win and a save in the series victory over Georgia Southwestern.
