AUGUSTA, Ga. – University of South Carolina Aiken softball standout
Kate Newberry has been named the PBC Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league office.
Newberry, a native of Watkinsville, Ga., was instrumental in USC Aiken's three-game sweep of Lander.
In the series opener, she went three-for-four with two RBI and scored three runs. In the fourth inning, she singled and later scored, making it 4-2. Newberry tied the game at 4-4 with a solo home run to right center field on a 3-2 pitch, which was the ninth of the at bat. She led off the eighth inning and promptly ended the game with a solo round-tripper on the first pitch she saw for the 5-4 win.
Newberry went two-for-three with three RBI and a double in the second game of the series. Her first inning double to right field allowed two runs to score, including what turned out to be the game-winner. She wrapped up the weekend by scoring a run against the Bearcats.
For the week, Newberry went five-for-10 with three extra-base hits, including two homers. She drove in five runs and scored four times.
