USC Aiken Baseball Notes – Week 7

March 14, 2023

Each week, USC Aiken will produce notes. This week, the Pacers stay at home for the first game of the week against Newberry College on Wednesday, March 15. Then on Friday, March 17, the team travels to Columbus, Ga., to face the Columbus State Cougars for a three-game conference series. Recapping Last Week USC Aiken is now 17-5 on the season and remain perfect in the PBC with a 9-0 record. The Pacers finished the week 5-0 after defeating Francis Marion and Coker at their home stadiums and then completing the three-game sweep at home against Flagler. Mid-Week Win The Pacers extended their win streak to four against the Patriots of Francis Marion and are now 8-2 over their last 10 games. USC Aiken won the low scoring affair 3-1. Kevin Cox earned his first win of the season giving up one run on five hits with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. Against the Coker Cobras, the Pacers are now 6-2 all-time after a 4-3 win. USC Aiken was able to hold off Coker with a one-two-three bottom of the ninth to end the game. In the three-game series against the Flagler Saints, the Pacers used a five-run sixth inning in game one to earn the 11-8 victory. Due to incoming inclement weather, the Saturday and Sunday contests was turned into a Saturday doubleheader. USC Aiken earned the only runs in the first game of the makeshift doubleheader winning the game 2-0 in which both teams featured great pitching performances. Going the Distance Jacob Fletcher earned his fourth win of the year with a complete game shutout in game one of the Saturday contests. He allowed three hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Hernandez Goes Yard In the later game, head coach Michael Holder's team got the first score of the contest in the bottom of the first when Josh Sharp scored on a single by Justin Byrd. In the second inning, Jose Hernandez stretched the score to 2-0 with a homerun over the left field fence on the first pitch of the inning. Later, with the 7-2 lead, the Pacers saw the visitors load the bases in the eighth inning. Holder brought in Byrd from second base to pitch. Byrd ended the Saints' threat and quickly got the remaining two outs to end the inning. After adding a hit and earning a walk in the top of the ninth, Flagler left both runners stranded on base to end the game. The Closer Dylan Wilhelm earned three saves last week. He grabbed his first save against the Patriots with one frame of work and striking out one. His second save came against the Cobras in which he pitched another single inning and struck out one. The final save came in game one against the Saints. Wilhelm pitched an inning, struck out one and earned his sixth save of the year. Inside The Numbers Since moving to Division II, the Pacers are 137-61 (69.2 percent) in Wednesday games.
