Box Score 2 GREENWOOD, S.C. – Lander took both games of a doubleheader from 17th-ranked USC Aiken in Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Legion Field.
Lander (13-9, 4-0 PBC) earned a 4-1 victory in game one before garnering a 9-1 win over USC Aiken (13-8, 1-4 PBC) in game two.
The doubleheader marked the first two road games of the year in the 2011 season for USC Aiken.
The Pacers and Bearcats will conclude their three-game PBC set with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday, March 13.
Lander opened the first game by taking an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off a two RBI single from designated hitter Pete Hernandez.
USC Aiken would pull within one run in the top of the next inning when Pacer designated hitter Matt Key (New Ellenton, S.C./Silver Bluff) doubled in JJ Loker (Elkton, Va./Spotswood), who had opened the inning by reaching on an error.
Lander would score again in the bottom of the inning to extend its lead once again to two runs at 3-1. The Bearcats moved their lead to three runs in the bottom of the fifth when Jeff May doubled to center field to score Lander second baseman Erik Lunde.
Neither team would be able to find another run with Lander holding on down the stretch for the three-run victory.
Lander out-hit the Pacers 6-4 in the contest. No Pacer finished with multiple hits in the game.
Lunde was the only player for either team to collect more than one hit. He was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Cory Hopper (5-0) picked up the win on the hill for the Bearcats. Hopper dealt 7.1 innings, striking out seven.
Lander's Jay Robinson pitched the final 1.2 innings to claim the save. It was his first save of the 2011 season.
USC Aiken's Thomas McLeod (Chapin, S.C./Chapin) earned the loss. McLeod, who is now 3-3 on the year, struck out five batters in the game.
In the second game, USC Aiken opened things up by taking an early 1-0 advantage when Loker singled in Teddy Leverett (Evans, Ga./Truett-McConnell), who had singled to left field to get things going for the Pacers in the inning.
That would be the final Pacer run of the game with Lander scoring nine unanswered to earn the win.
Lander finished with five more hits than the Pacers at 12-7.
Jason Cochcroft (Gilbert, S.C./Gilbert) took the loss on the hill for USC Aiken, dealing one inning and allowing four earned runs. He is now 2-1 on the year.
USC Aiken reliever Houston Taylor (Chesterfield, S.C./Cheraw) pitched strongly after taking over for Cochcroft, striking out 12. He was one of three relievers on the day for USC Aiken.
Lander's Chris Thomas earned the win in game two, striking out six in eight innings on the mound. Thomas is 4-1 in 2011 after Saturday's game two win.
USC Aiken was led by Leverett, Josh Miller (Chapin, S.C./Chapin) and Tripp Warrick (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) in the second game with each collecting two hits.
AJ Nunziato was 3-for-5 with two runs scored for Lander in game two.
