AUGUSTA, Ga. - USC Aiken pulled away in the final minutes of the first half and never looked back in a resounding 72-47 win over rival Augusta State in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The victory improves the Pacers to 11-10 overall on the 2009-10 season. USC Aiken is back to .500 in league play at 6-6 in Peach Belt Conference action.
Augusta State is now 1-19 in the 2009-10 season. The Lady Jaguars are 0-11 in the Peach Belt Conference.
USC Aiken's victory over Augusta State on Wednesday gives the Pacers their first season sweep of their rival under head coach Mike Brandt.
USC Aiken opened the game by rushing out to a 7-0 lead in the first three minutes. Augusta State would score 12 of the next 18 points in the contest to pull back to within one at 13-12 with just over eight minutes remaining in the first half. The Pacers would squash Augusta State's advances by going on a 5-0 run over the next three minutes to own an 18-12 lead with five minutes left in the first half of play.
The Pacers continued pushing ahead by extending their lead to double digits at 11 points at 27-16 with 59 seconds left in the first half of action. A Daniela Tarailo (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) jumper with four seconds left in the first half gave the Pacers a 13-point 29-16 lead at intermission.
The Tarailo jumper from the right baseline ended a 16-3 run to close out the first half for the Pacers. USC Aiken held Augusta State to just one field goal in the final eight and a half minutes of the first half. The 16 points that the Pacer defense held Augusta State to in the first half was the least amount of points that the Lady Jaguars have scored in any half in the 2009-10 campaign.
USC Aiken as a team concluded the first half shooting 39.3 percent (11-of-28). The Pacer defense in turn held Augusta State to a 31.6 (6-for-19) shooting performance in the first half.
USC Aiken opened the second half by extending its lead to 18 points at 38-20 with 15:36 left in the game. The Pacer spurt to open the second half forced Augusta State interim head coach Clint Bryant to take a time out.
The Pacers never turned back, going ahead by as many as 28 in the contest before emerging with the 25-point 72-47 victory.
USC Aiken finished the contest shooting 47.3 percent (26-for-55) as a team. The Pacer defense held Augusta State to a 28.9 percent (13-for-45) shooting performance.
USC Aiken ended the win over the Lady Jaguars with three players in double figures. Catherine Cain (Dayton, Ohio/Ohio University) led the Pacer charge with 16 points. Cain was 6-for-9 from the field in the contest.
The final two Pacers in double digits were Kendra Chandler (Aiken, S.C./Aiken) and Tarailo. Both finished the contest with 10 points each.
Deandra Schirmer (Holton, Kan./Cloud County) just missed on a double-double in the game with nine boards and seven points.
Augusta State had two players in double figures in the game in Waneta Carlisle (13) and Eboni Davis (10).
USC Aiken will stay on the road next to take on Flagler for the first time in program history in St. Augustine, Fla. on Monday, Feb. 8. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
The Pacers claimed the first ever meeting between the two programs earlier this season with a 66-51 victory over the Saints on Jan. 20 at the Convocation Center in Aiken, S.C.
The USC Aiken-Flagler women's game is the first game of a men's and women's doubleheader in St. Augustine as the Pacer men will take on the Flagler men immediately following the women's tilt at approximately 7:30 p.m.
