MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The USC Aiken women's basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped in a 57-54 loss to Georgia College & State in Peach Belt Conference women's basketball action at the Centennial Center on Saturday afternoon.
The loss drops the Pacers to 13-11 on the 2009-10 season. USC Aiken is now 8-7 in Peach Belt Conference action. GCSU with the victory is now 17-6 overall, including 10-3 in the PBC.
The game opened with Georgia College & State obtaining an early 5-0 advantage over the first two minutes. The Pacers would cut the lead to four at 8-4 with just under 15 minutes remaining in the first half, but a 7-2 run by the Bobcats over the next couple of minutes would give GCSU a nine-point 15-6 lead.
USC Aiken would mount a 12-6 run next to sit behind just three points at 21-18 with 7:44 left in the first half of play. The game was tied for the first time a minute later at 21-21.
Buoyed by two three-pointers, GCSU would go on a 10-3 run over the next four minutes to fall behind seven at 31-24 with a little over two minutes remaining until intermission. The two teams would enter halftime with GCSU owning a 33-26 lead.
Lindsay Sundberg (Mansfield, Conn./E.O. Smith) led the Pacers with nine points in the first half. She knocked down all three of USC Aiken's three-pointers in the first half. As a team, USC Aiken ended the first half shooting 33 percent from the field. GCSU concluded the first half shooting 36.4 percent from the field.
USC Aiken opened the second half by outscoring GCSU 13-5 to take the lead for the first time in the contest at 39-38 with 12:17 remaining in the game. Deandra Schirmer (Holton, Kan./Cloud County CC) scored the go-ahead lay-up for the Pacers. Catherine Cain (Dayton, Ohio/Ohio University) collected the Pacers their largest lead of the game up to that point at 41-38 a minute later when she knocked down two free throws.
The Pacers and Bobcats would tangle back-and-forth over the next six minutes with GCSU pulling ahead by two at 47-45. USC Aiken's Kendra Chandler (Aiken, S.C./Aiken) would place the Pacers back ahead at the 5:02 mark at 48-47 after she connected on a three-point play. Chandler was fouled in the act of making a lay-up. She calmly nailed the ensuing free throw attempt to give the Pacers the lead once again.
The Bobcats would go on a 5-0 run to own a 52-48 lead, but the Pacers kept within reach due to a thrilling Cain three-pointer and a putback by Chandler, which left the Pacers behind by just one point at 54-53 with 2:11 remaining in the game.
The score still 54-53 in favor of GCSU with a minute left, Georgia College & State's Chimere Jordan was able to hit a three-pointer with 50 seconds left to make the score 57-53 in their favor and more importantly a two-possession game.
Schirmer was fouled on USC Aiken's next offensive possession and she made one of two from the charity stripe to set the score at 57-54.
On GCSU's next offensive possession, Jordan missed a long three-point attempt that was then hit out of bounds by GCSU with 8.3 seconds left to give the Pacers the basketball.
The Pacers could not take advantage with Cain's three-point attempt from the right corner at the final buzzer hitting the back iron to give the Bobcats the narrow three-point victory.
Sundberg led three Pacers in double figures in the contest. Sundberg had 12 points in total with all of her points coming from beyond the arc. Cain finished with 11 points. She was a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the game. Chandler was the final Pacer in double figures with 10.
Jordan led the Bobcats with 19 points. Fresh off a triple-double in GCSU's last game, Antoinette Reames collected a double-double for Georgia College & State with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
USC Aiken finished the contest shooting 34.6 percent as a team. GCSU concluded Saturday's game shooting exactly 40 percent.
The USC Aiken athletic department will next hold a special "Black Out - Fight for Sight Night" as part of the men's and women's basketball doubleheader against UNC Pembroke at the Convocation Center on Wednesday, Feb. 17.
The special evening will be held in honor of USC Aiken all-time leading women's basketball scorer Meredith Legg.
Just weeks after finishing her illustrious Pacer career, Legg was diagnosed with a rare form of Melanoma eye cancer in her left eye.
To help raise funds and awareness for Melanoma Research, the USC Aiken athletic department is asking everyone to wear black to the doubleheader. Black is the official color of Melanoma cancer.
All proceeds on the evening will go towards Melanoma Research.
The evening gets underway at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 17 with the USC Aiken women tangling with Peach Belt Conference rival UNC Pembroke. The Pacer men will hit the hardwood against the UNC Pembroke men immediately following the women's game at approximately 7:30 p.m.
