NEWBERRY, S.C. - The University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team opened its 2009 regular season campaign with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Newberry College on Saturday afternoon.

USC Aiken drops to 0-1 on the year with the loss, while Newberry improves to 2-0 on the 2009 season with the victory over the Pacers.

Newberry scored the only goal of the match in the 52nd-minute when Meagan Heney chipped the ball past USC Aiken goalkeeper Nicole Westphal (Springfield, Va./Paul VI Catholic) after receiving a cross into the box from teammate Michaela Peach.

Westphal surrendered the one goal, but she ended the match with four saves. Newberry in total took 17 shots in the contest. USC Aiken concluded their season opener with four shots. The Pacers took two shots in each of the halves.

In her first regular season contest as a Pacer, which was ironically played against her former school, Alie Brady (Summerville, S.C./Summerville) acquired two of the Pacer attempts on goal in the game.

The Pacers will stay on the road for their next match against Anderson in Anderson, S.C. at 7 p.m. on Sept. 3.
