Pacers Claw Past Nationally-Ranked Bears

Box Score AIKEN, S.C. - Catherine Cain obtained her first double-double as a Pacer and the USC Aiken women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak by upsetting 23rd-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne, 63-51, on Thursday evening at the Convocation Center.

USC Aiken's win avenges an earlier 59-57 last second win by Lenoir-Rhyne at their home gymnasium on Tuesday, Nov. 24. The Pacers are 5-1 all-time now against Lenoir-Rhyne after Thursday's victory.

USC Aiken is more importantly now 5-4 on the 2009-10 season. The Pacers have one more home game against another nationally-ranked South Atlantic Conference institution before breaking for the holidays. The Pacers will tangle with No. 22 Carson-Newman at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19 at the Convocation Center.

The Pacers will enter the contest against Carson-Newman with a 10-13 record against nationally-ranked opposition under Mike Brandt. The Pacers have won seven of their last 12 outings against ranked foes.

Cain (Dayton, Ohio/Ohio University) was the only Pacer in double figures in the game, ending her evening with 17 points and 11 boards. Cain was 5-for-12 from the field and 5-for-6 from the charity stripe in the Pacer win.

In her second game back, Kendra Chandler (Aiken, S.C./Aiken) secured seven points and brought down five rebounds. The five rebounds bring Chandler's all-time total to 404. With the five caroms, Chandler became the 10th player in USC Aiken women's basketball history to acquire 400 or more rebounds in their career.

Lenoir-Rhyne was led in its loss by Cameron Sealy and Jami Safrit. Sealey ended her night with 11 points, while Safrit chipped in with 10 of her own.
USC Aiken's defense was stout against Lenoir-Rhyne, holding the nationally-ranked Bears to just 31.3 percent shooting (15-for-48) on the evening. The
Pacers in turn shot 39.6 percent (19-for-48) in the game.

Both teams were solid from the free throw line with Lenoir-Rhyne hitting 20 free throws at a 90.9 percent clip and the Pacers knocking down 21 of their 25 attempts from the free throw line (84 percent).

USC Aiken and Lenoir-Rhyne battled for most of the first half with L-R holding a slight 20-17 advantage with 6:26 left in the game. The Pacers would hold the Bears to just one field goal over the final six-plus minutes of the first stanza, while at the same time going on an 11-2 run over the same stretch to hold a six-point 28-22 advantage at halftime.

The Pacers held that same six-point lead at 36-30 with 13:26 left in the game. Things would change from there though with USC Aiken holding the Bears scoreless for the next four minutes to hold a 14-point lead at 44-30 with 9:08 remaining in the game.

USC Aiken would never let its lead slip below single digits from there with the Pacers securing their largest lead of the contest at 16 points at 59-43 with 2:32 left on the game clock. The Bears would whittle it down to 12 points, but USC Aiken was able to acquire another crucial region victory with the 12-point 63-51 win.

The Pacers with the win over the Bears are now an impressive 60-2 over the last four years when leading with five minutes left in regulation.

???????The win over L-R came on Toys for Tots night at the Convocation Center with the athletic department through a cooperative effort with the women's basketball program holding a toy drive for the less fortunate. The special promotion also done in conjunction with the United States Marine Corps League in Aiken will benefit the Taylor family, who lost their home in a fire last week.
