Pacers Fall To Spartans

Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C.--Scott Eckard kept USC Aiken's offense off balance just enough to allow #30 USC Upstate (34-24) to grab a come-from-behind 5-3 win over the Pacers (36-21) on day two of the 2007 Peach Belt Conference Baseball Tournament at Harley Park. The loss is the fourth-straight to the Spartans this season, a first for USC Aiken. However, the Pacers remain alive in the tournament, falling into the loser's bracket.

USC Aiken will face the loser of Armstrong Atlantic State and Francis Marion in an elimination game Saturday morning at 11:00 AM.

The Pacers jumped on the board in the second inning with an RBI single through the right side by Zach Cooper plating Chris Sheehan from third base. Cooper went 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Marc Joehnk then beat out a potential double play grounder to second base allowing Sheehan to score making it 2-0.

With the score 2-1 in the fourth, USC Upstate scratched across the tying run on an RBI single to center field off the bat of Jake Rollins. But with two on and one out, Jon Paul got John Caddell to ground into a double play to end the inning.

In total, five double plays were turned in the game, three by the Spartans, however, proved to be costly for the Pacers.

After Darryl Pui doubled down the left field line in the fifth allowing USCA to regain the 3-2 advantage, USC Upstate answered with a two-out single to center field by Caddell driving in Jimmy Tanner to knot the game at 3-3.

Still tied heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Spartans pushed across two runs on three hits including the go ahead RBI single to right field by Andrew Maddox.

Ken Raborn led off the eighth with a single to center field, one of his two hits on the day, but Chad Jacobsen, the PBC leader in RBI with 72, lined into a his third double play of the day to end the threat.

Cooper reached with an infield hit to start the ninth, but Eckard then set down the Pacers in order to seal the victory.

"One guy out-pitched our six," said USC Aiken head coach Kenny Thomas. "Our guys fought hard. They got two balls that rolled up the middle and we didn't. It was a tough loss. We played well and they played well."

Eckard (6-4) was masterful in his first outing in 16 days, tossing 71 of his 119 pitches for strikes. In the complete game performance, he scattered nine hits and three walks, striking out four and allowing three earned runs.

"Scott [Eckard] pitched a great game," said USC Upstate head coach Matt Fincher. "I continued to ask him how his arm was feeling and he said he wanted to keep going out there. He won the game for us and I'm real proud of him."

For the second straight game, USC Aiken tried "pitching by committee" with six hurlers taking the hill and no one going more than 2.0 innings. Dustin Tyra (4-1) was charged with the loss allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits and one walk in five batters faced.

Andrew Runion and Kyle Bowley each had two hits to lead the Spartans.
