Box Score AIKEN, S.C.--Matt Keply drew a bases loaded walk with one out in the top of the 10th inning to force in the game winning run as Catawba (13-8) upset 12th ranked USC Aiken (14-4) 6-5 in 10 innings on Tuesday evening at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. The loss stopped the Pacers' seven game winning streak and is just the team's second loss in the past 14 games. The Indians halt a six-game slide in their series with USCA.
After Catawba led 2-0 in the fifth inning, USC Aiken finally got to starter Paul Link, who was perfect through four complete. Four-straight hits keyed by RBI singles from
Josh Eachues and
Marc Joehnk capped off by a sacrifice fly by
Darryl Pui gave USC Aiken its first lead 3-2. Eachues' two hits led the Pacers who got nine hits from eight different players.
Jerry Sands (5) blasted the first pitch he saw with one out in the sixth inning over the wall in left to quickly knot the game back up at 3-3.
Seesawing back and forth, the Indians pulled back in front 5-4 after an Craig Lyerly single in the seventh drove in two. But again the Pacers answered, this time in the form of an infield, RBI single by
Brad Johnson. The left-fielder rocketed a comebacker off of pitcher Matt Seabolt that ricocheted to third base, allowing
Zach Cooper to score.
All square in the 10th, Sands walked and Chad Baker and Zach Evans each singled through the infield to set up bases loaded with one out. After an eight-pitch at bat, Keply drew the full-count walk, scoring Sands with the game winner.
USC Aiken went down in order in the home half of the 10th. It is just the third loss for the Pacers when leading after six innings in the past two years (now 49-3).
Evans finished 3-for-5 while Baker and Zeb Link each added two hits for Catawba.
Beau Hill tossed 6.2 innings in the no-decision, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits and two walks, striking out nine.
Mark Yarbrough (1-1) suffered the loss with one earned run on two hits and two walks in 1.1 innings.
Seabolt (1-1) held the Pacers to one hit over 2.0 innings, fanning two for the win while Evans (4) pitched up the save with a perfect ninth.
USC Aiken and Catawba will play game two of their mid-week series tomorrow at 6:00 PM at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.
