Box Score AIKEN, S.C.--USC Aiken (6-7, 1-0 PBC) knocked off the Lander Lady Bearcats (6-8, 0-1 PBC) 3-1 in both team's Peach Belt Conference volleyball opener on Friday evening. Games scores were 30-17, 30-18, 28-30, and 30-21. The Lady Pacers won their fourth-straight over Lander and are now 13-3 all-time in the series. (RACHEL DALITZ PICTURED)
One of the better attacking teams in the league, the Lady Pacers were off the mark on Friday hitting just .120 including a negative .022 in their game three loss. Lander was equally unable to find the mark hitting just .037.
Mandy Gerolstein led all players with 16 kills to go with four blocks and two aces for 20.5 total points, hitting .344.
Missy Deardorff chipped in 11 kills and four blocks hitting .333 from her right side position.
Veronica Seidle registered a match-high 21 digs while setter
Rachel Dalitz had three kills on four attacks, five aces, one solo block, and 23 assists.
Tracy Jacobs paced the Lady Bearcats hitting .250 with six kills and two blocks. Christy Plecha had seven blocks while Andrea Griffin added five blocks and five kills. As a team, Lander recorded 17.0 team blocks.
Amanda Timm led the Lady Pacers to a game one win 30-17. The sophomore right side had two key kills during an 8-2 run in which USCA opened up a 10-8 contest into a 17-10 advantage. A late 6-0 spurt fueled by a pair of
Hayden Johnson aces made it 29-16.
In game two, it was the Lady Bearcats clawing back from an early 9-3 deficit with a 5-0 run capped by a Kerri Sorensen ace to draw within one point. After tying the game up at 15-15, however, the Lady Pacers went on a 15-3 run to close it out 30-18.
Game three opened well for Lander as a 6-1 run including a Kay Stewart service ace ballooned the margin to 15-9. The Lady Pacers got back in it, knotting the game at 21-21 after six-straight points, but with it tied 26-26, Lander won four consecutive points and held on for the 30-28 win.
A sluggish start to game four had the Lady Pacers quickly on their heels trailing 4-0. But USC Aiken responded by reeling off 13 unanswered points keyed by five kills from Gerolstein and two kills and two blocks by Deardorff to take command 13-4 and cruise to the 30-21 victory.
USC Aiken will host rival USC Upstate in a key Peach Belt Conference clash tomorrow at 12:00 PM. Lander travels across the Savannah River to face Augusta State at 1:00 PM.
