AIKEN, S.C. – The USCA volleyball team is third in the Southeast Region as part of the inaugural round of NPI rankings released by the NCAA Monday.
The NCAA Power Index, or NPI, is the ranking system used to evaluate team performance. NPI combines game results, the strength of opponents and any sport-specific dials to calculate a team's NPI value and ranking. Each match receives a value based on the result of the contest and the opponent's NPI.
NPI Rankings are used to help select the most eligible and deserving teams for the NCAA Tournament in late November. In the Southeast Region, teams from the South Atlantic Conference, Conference Carolinas, and Peach Belt all receive one automatic bid for the winner of the conference tournament.
From there, the NCAA will select teams to fill out the 8-team regional with help from NPI calculations. Whatever team has the highest NPI in the region will have hosting rights.
Head coach
Glenn Cox's team stands at 14-5 on the season and sports the No. 49 national NPI Ranking (57.840).
Flagler is first in the Southeast Region and No. 9 nationally (64.697). Anderson is second in the region and No. 16 in Division II (62.499).
Francis Marion (No. 56), Carson-Newman (No. 62), Emmanuel (No. 73), Lenoir-Rhyne (No. 78) and UNC Pembroke (No. 89) round out the top eight teams in the Southeast Region. Wingate (No. 93) and Tusculum (No. 94) complete the top 10.
The Pacers return to action this week for two matches at Middle Georgia Friday and Saturday.
