Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C.--USC Aiken (26-8, 9-5 PBC) got back-to-back complete game shutouts from
Steve Dunham and Derek Claussen as the 12th ranked Pacers swept a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader from UNC Pembroke (23-15, 8-12 PBC) on a blustery Saturday afternoon at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. The Pacers won game one 13-0 and took the nightcap by the count of 6-0.
USCA, winners of 15 of their last 17, registered back-to-back shutouts of a conference opponent for the first time in over a decade. The Pacers blanked USC Spartanburg (now USC Upstate) on March 5-6, 1994.
In game one, Dunham (5-1) allowed only four hits and did not issue a walk, striking out nine in his first career complete game shutout. With the help of two double plays, he faced just two batters over the minimum. The right-handed ace lowered his ERA to 1.95 and now has 59 strikeouts to just 12 walks in 64.2 innings of work.
Marc Joehnk and
Brandon Barenie each had three hits to lead the Pacers. Joehnk had two doubles.
Daniel Quartararo smacked an RBI triple in the fifth and finished 2-for-5 with a game-high three RBI.
Casey Derhak and
Zach Cooper each added two hits and combined for four RBI and four runs scored.
The Pacers opened the game with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning keyed by RBI singles off the bats of
Steven Kinney and Joehnk. Cooper, Derhak, and Quartararo tacked on RBI hits in the fourth as USCA pulled ahead 6-0.
USC Aiken doubled its lead in the fifth plating six runs on five hits and a
Scott Wandless sacrifice fly. Quartararo had the big blow of the inning as he tripled to right center scoring Derhak and Cooper and making it 12-0.
After Joehnk led off the sixth with a double to right field, Barenie drove him in to set the final margin at 13-0.
Barret Otto went 2-for-3 for the Braves while Ben Crowell and Justin Bowman had the other two hits for UNC Pembroke.
James Luper (3-5) was chased after 3.1 innings surrendering six earned runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out one in the loss.
In game two, it was Claussen's turn to take the mound and he followed up Dunham's dominating performance with a gem of his own. Claussen (4-2) allowed only two hits in his first career complete game shutout, walking five and fanning five.
Robert Davis went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI to lead the Pacers. Quartararo added a 3-for-4 game while Joehnk was 2-for-3 with two more doubles. Derhak finished 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to 19 games. The junior infielder has hit safely in 33 of the team's 34 games this season.
USCA took control early with a four-run first inning. After back-to-back singles by Derhak and Quartararo, Davis doubled to center to make it 2-0. Joehnk added a double down the left field line scoring Davis and Barenie finished things off with an RBI single to left field making it 4-0. Quartararo tacked on an RBI double in the fourth and Davis an RBI double in the sixth to set the final score at 6-0.
Otto and Crowell had the lone hits for UNC Pembroke.
Tyson Van Dam (4-4) also went the distance for the Braves giving up six earned runs on 12 hits, striking out five and not issuing a walk.
USC Aiken and UNC Pembroke will square off in the final game of their conference series tomorrow at 1:00 PM. The Pacers, having won five-straight conference games, are looking for their first sweep of the Braves since 1995.
