USC Aiken Falls Just Short Against No. 17 Catawba

Box Score SALISBURY, N.C.--Sophomore forward Terrence Woodbury came off the Pacer bench to score 25 of his game-high 34 points in the second half as USC Aiken (2-3) nearly pulled off the upset of #17 Catawba (6-0) on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Indians made their 42-40 halftime advantage stand up for the 92-90 victory, sweeping the two game non-conference season set with the Pacers (TERRENCE WOODBURY PICTURED)

For Woodbury, his 34 points ties Clint Keown for the seventh highest single game total in the Pacers' NCAA history. It is also the most scored by a sophomore in a single game at USCA as well as the highest point total of anyone in the Peach Belt Conference this season. The 6-5 native of Melbourne, Fla. connected on 14-of-22 shots from the field and converted 6-of-11 attempts at the free throw line to go with 11 rebounds including eight on the offensive glass.

Catawba opened on fire from the floor hitting 11 of their first 15 attempts to race to an early 25-9 advantage. But the Pacers fought back to take their first lead of the game at 38-36 with 2:01 remaining in the half on Richard Blocker's three-pointer. Jamel Hamilton's trey with 17 ticks remaining gave the Indians back the lead that they would take into the locker room 42-40. The lead would change hands 12 times over the final 22 minutes of the contest.

Blocker added his second double double in the past three games with 13 points on 2-of-3 from deep to go with 12 rebounds. As a team, USC Aiken out rebounded the taller Catawba squad 42-33 and owned a dominating 21-5 edge in second chance points.

Andy Thomson drained a three-pointer with 13:27 left to play in the second half to push Catawba back to a 56-49 lead, but the Indians could not shake the Pacers as Woodbury scored 12-straight points to retake the lead 61-60 with 10:05 remaining.

Over the next three and a half minutes, neither team led by more than two points with the lead changing hands seven times. Helgi Magnusson's jumper in the paint finally made it a four-point spread for Catawba at 73-69 with 6:27 to play.

Catawba increased that lead back into double figures at 85-75 with 3:05 on the clock, but back came the Pacers behind a three-point play from Woodbury and a three-pointer from Kenny Burr to slice the margin to a single possession at 89-86 with 1:19 to play.

Trailing 91-88, Woodbury's offensive stick back of Chris Brown's three-point attempt made it a 91-90 game with six seconds to play. Magnusson converted one of the two ensuing free throws with five ticks left, but Lukas Varga's three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark.

Burr added a season-best 16 points on 4-of-6 from behind the arc while Brown chipped in 12 as USCA's bench outscored Catawba's reserves 46-28.

Magnusson led six Indians in double figures with 18 points. Hamilton added 17 on 4-of-7 from deep while Thomson chipped in 14 points. In addition to Jolly Manning's 11 and Chris Wooldridge's 10, Brian Graves had a double double with 12 points and 10 assists.

Catawba shot 53.3 percent for the game (32-of-60) while USC Aiken was 35-of-73 for 47.9 percent. Both teams connected on nine three-pointers, but the Indians outscored the Pacers at the charity stripe 19-11.

USC Aiken returns home to Aiken to host North Georgia on Saturday, December 3 at 7:30 PM. It will be the Peach Belt Conference opener for the Pacers.
