Pacers Stay Perfect

Box Score AIKEN, SC--Sophomore Joseph Cawley knocked home a rebound shot from 25 yards out in the 107th minute of play to lift the USC Aiken Pacers (2-0-0) to a stunning 2-1 double overtime win over Lees-McRae College (1-1-1) on Wednesday night in men's non-conference soccer at "Pacer Pit". It is Cawley's second overtime game winner in as many games for the Pacers.

USCA, off to its best start since opening 3-0-0 in 2000, notches the program's first double overtime win since October 8, 1995, a span on 12 double OT games. Ironically, that was a 4-3 victory over Lees-McRae. The Bobcats, the defending Carolinas Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC) champions, had outscored USCA 8-0 in two matches over the past two seasons before the Pacers evened the all-time series Wednesday at 3-3.

In a scoreless first half, the Pacers held a 7-3 advantage in shots and a slim 3-2 edge in corner kicks, but neither team was successful in establishing control.

Early in the second half, however, freshman Matthew Martin (Martinez, Ga.) scored off a pass from Matt Cawley and Andre Joseph to give USCA a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute.

Lees-McRae did not waste much time in leveling the score when Michael Shope's shot from the right side of the 17-yard box beat Harold Tate in the 57th minute. Tate allowed just one goal, making one save in net for USCA. He has a 0.89 goals against average in his first two games as a Pacer.

In the first overtime, Eugene Eshun-Philips fired a rocket from 10 yards out, but it sailed just wide of the net with 2:35 remaining. Just 56 seconds into the second overtime, LMC's Tim Bender had a chance to keep his team unbeaten on the year, but his good look from 15 yards out was just high.

The Pacers were able to apply pressure in the final five minutes of the second OT with three consecutive corner kicks, the last of which resulted in Cawley's game winner. After the initial attempt was kicked away by a Bobcat defender, it came right to Cawley well outside the box and he knocked it into the back of the net.

Calvin Dixon stopped four shots in goal for Lees-McRae as the Pacers outshot the Bobcats 17-9 for the game.

USC Aiken will look to continue its magical start when the Pacers host North Georgia College & State on Saturday, September 4 at 4:00 PM. Lees-McRae will have 10 days off before traveling to Charlotte, N.C. to face Queens University in a CVAC showdown at 1:00 PM.
