Pacers Avoid Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C.--Bradley Key's two-out, two-run, home run off the scoreboard in left-center field proved to be the difference in a 3-2 win over second ranked University of North Florida in game two of a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader today at Roberto Hernandez Stadium in Aiken, S.C. A day after pounding out 18 hits in the series opener on Friday, the Ospreys had 17 hits in game one of the doubleheader and beat the Pacers 11-6.

After the split, UNF moves to 36-14 overall and 21-6 in conference play. USCA improves to 26-24 and 10-17 in the PBC. The Ospreys do however claim at least a share of the 2004 Peach Belt Conference Championship. Augusta State, after winning two out of three this weekend against USC Spartanburg, is four games behind North Florida in the league standings with four games remaining on the schedule.

The Pacers snatched an early lead in game two when Bob Hatcher followed Brandon Barenie's triple with an RBI ground out to put USC Aiken in front 1-0.

Damon Olinto's solo home run, just to the left of the 400-feet marking in straight away center field, in the fifth inning tied the score at 1-1. Key's blast came in the bottom of the fifth and scored Daniel Quartararo who had reached on a walk two batters before.

Key finished game two with two hits in three at bats, a run scored and two RBIs.

North Florida cut the deficit to one run in the top of the seventh and put the tying run at first base. Josh Howard led off the inning with a single to left field and advanced to second on a wild pitch.

After USCA's Derek Claussen got Olinto to go down swinging for the first out of the inning, William Kovatch singled through the right side to drive in Howard. Claussen came back to get Ryan Knight to strike out looking and then enticed Jeff Millsaps to fly out to Ashley Farr in left field to end the game.

Claussen went the distance for the Pacers to improve to 5-4 on the season. The junior allowed nine hits, two runs, one walk and struck out four batters. Jared Incinelli (1-2) took the loss for the Ospreys after giving up five hits, three runs and three walks in four and two-thirds innings.

In game one, North Florida broke open a 6-6 game with five runs in the final two innings. Howard's single, the third of four straight two-out base hits for the Ospreys in the eighth, drove in what turned out to be the winning run. Knight followed with an RBI single of his own to give UNF an 8-6 lead.

Howard went two-for-five in game one with two runs scored and two knocked in.

The visitors added three more runs with two outs in the ninth to post the 11-6 win.

USC Aiken jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first. Farr singled through the left side and later scored on an Osprey throwing error to give the Pacers a 1-0 advantage. Farr finished one-for-two with three walks and three runs scored.

North Florida grabbed the lead in the second with a two-run single by Marion Knowles that scored Matt Oxendine and Joey Russell. Freshman Derek Gordon tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with the first home run of his USCA career, but UNF answered in the third when Millsaps went deep over the left field wall, putting North Florida in front 4-2.

Knowles went two-for-four with two runs scored and two RBIs. Millsaps had two hits in five at bats, a run scored and an RBI. After going four-for-four in the first game of the series on Friday night, Mike Fryrear went three-for-five with a run scored and one driven in.

The Ospreys took a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. Key's double down the right field line cut the deficit in half and Robert Davis knotted the game at six all with a sacrifice fly.

Davis finished game one with two hits in four at bats and two driven in. Quartararo went three-for-five for the Pacers with a pair of runs scored.

Billy Layman (4-2) picked up the win for North Florida after pitching three scoreless innings of relief. He struck out two, walked two and gave up two hits. Wes McColl (3-6) took the loss after pitching seven and two-thirds innings, allowing 12 hits and seven earned runs.

The Pacers will finish off their 2004 non-conference schedule on Tuesday with a doubleheader against West Virginia Tech. The first game of the day-night doubleheader at Roberto Hernandez Stadium will begin at 11:30 a.m., and game two will begin at 6:30 p.m.
