Wes McColl had his best outing of the year on the mound for USC Aiken (25-22) and
Bradley Key provided the offense as the Pacers posted a 3-1 win over Limestone College (26-26) in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday night at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. USCA snapped a four-game losing skid and improved to 16-3 in their last 19 games at the friendly confines with a record time of 1:41.
Scoreless entering the bottom of the third,
Ian Kowalchuk led the inning off by reaching on an error. After advancing to second on a passed ball,
Brandon Barenie struck out and
Daniel Quartararo lined out to right field.
Ashley Farr stepped to the plate and punched a single through the right side of the infield to plate Kowalchuk with the game's first run on the team's first hit. Key (10) followed up Farr's single with a two-run blast over the left field wall, tying him with Farr for the team lead in homers with 10, and making it 3-0.
USC Aiken managed only three more hits, but McColl made it stand up. Limestone's only tally came in the fifth on a two-out double to left center by David Wise plating Richmond Lutz to make it 3-1.
McColl (3-5) allowed just one earned run on six hits and no walks, fanning three in 8.0 innings in the win.
Nick Wandless (4) worked a perfect ninth including one strikeout in notching the save.
Melvin Digh (2-5) pitched well for the Saints giving up three earned runs on four hits and two walks, striking out seven in the loss. Josh Cochran surrendered one hit and struck out one in four batters faced in working the eighth.
USC Aiken will host #2 North Florida in a three-game Peach Belt Conference series this weekend at Roberto Hernandez Stadium starting Friday, April 23 at 6:30 PM. Limestone concluded their regular season and will now enter play in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference postseason tournament.
