USCS Completes Sweep

Box Score SPARTANBURG, SC--USC Spartanburg (8-1, 3-0 PBC) scored three runs in the fifth inning to break open a 2-2 game and hold on for the 5-3 win over USC Aiken (2-6, 0-3 PBC) on Monday afternoon in Peach Belt Conference baseball at Harley Park. The game was played on Monday after Sunday's scheduled contest was washed out.

With the win, USC Spartanburg completes its first-ever three-game sweep of the Pacers dating back to the inception of the Peach Belt Conference in 1991-92. The Rifles, off to their best start since 1991, also picked up just their second sweep of a PBC foe in school history.

Daniel Quartararo led the game off with a single to left field. A pair of ground balls moved the Pacer second baseman to third with two outs. Robert Davis singled up the middle to plate Quartararo and make it 1-0.

USC Spartanburg answered in the home half of the first when Eric Davis' fielder's choice scored John Caddell to knot it up at 1-1. The Rifles pushed one more across in the second on a Carlos Aponte double and a Jim Kais RBI infield single to make it 2-1.

Quartararo (1), who went 2-for-5 on the afternoon with two runs scored and one RBI, led off the third inning with his first homer of the season to tie it up again at 2-2.

In the decisive three-run fifth inning, Chris Nowak, Bret Hansen, and Kais also registered RBI singles.

Ashley Farr's two out double to center field in the ninth plated Brandon Barenie to set the final margin at 5-3. Farr was 2-for-5 on the day.

Kais, Nowak, and Caddell rang up three hits each for the Rifles.

On the mound, starter Brandon Williams (3-0) scattered six hits and three walks over 8.0 innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out four in the win. Stan Smith (2) gave up two hits in the ninth, but recorded his second save in as many days.

Wes McColl (0-2) surrendered two earned runs on six hits, striking out two in 4.0 innings of work. Jerod Summer allowed three earned runs on four hits and one walk in two-thirds of an inning while Nick Wandless held the Rifles scoreless over the final 3.1 innings giving up just one hit and one walk, striking out four.

USC Aiken returns home to host 23rd ranked Columbus State in a three-game PBC series at Roberto Hernandez Stadium starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, February 21 at 1:00 PM.
