Kasey Mills scored a team-high 17 points and
Benazura Serbecic pulled down 13 rebounds as USC Aiken (1-1) raced to a big lead and held off a scrappy Philadelphia University (0-2) squad 62-55 on Saturday afternoon in the Eighth Annual Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic.
The Lady Pacers connected on 5-of-12 three-point attempts in the opening stanza and established a 13-0 advantage on points off turnovers to claim a 39-22 lead at the break. Mills had 11 of her 17 in the first 20 minutes on 3-of-3 from downtown.
After opening the second half with back-to-back buckets by Mills and
Lana Mandic, USCA took its largest lead at 43-22 with 19:00 to play. But a nearly 10-minute field goal drought allowed the Lady Rams to crawl back in the game, trimming the deficit to single digits at 45-37 on an Alisha Ferguson free throw with 9:38 to play.
Jordon Thomas scored two of her seven points at 9:05 to end the field goal drought as the Lady Pacers built a 56-41 lead with 4:25 to play. One last rally by Philadelphia cut the margin to 58-51 with 1:21 to play, but a three-pointer by Kate McNulty was off the mark out of bounds to the Lady Pacers.
After committing just five first half turnovers, USCA made 15 second-half miscues leading to 17 Lady Ram points.
USC Aiken shot 43.1 percent from the field for the game including 6-of-16 (37.5 percent) from deep and 12-of-17 at the stripe (70.6 percent). Philadelphia was held to 31.0 percent shooting and 3-of-13 from behind the arc (23.1 percent), but the Lady Rams were 16-of-19 at the line for 84.2 percent.
Samara Speakes led Philadelphia with a game-high 32 points on 10-of-23 shooting and 9-of-10 at the line. McNulty added nine points and Ferguson had seven points and seven rebounds.
Nola Grant had 10 points on 6-of-8 at the stripe to go with seven rebounds. Serbecic added seven points and four assists with her 13 boards while
Mindy Allee tallied seven points and six assists.
USC Aiken will face fellow Peach Belt Conference member Armstrong Atlantic State in Sunday's consolation bracket championship game at 1:00 PM.
