Box Score AIKEN, SC--J.H. Satcher Field was determined not to go quietly into the night on Sunday, as the USC Aiken Pacers (30-24, 13-16 PBC) and the UNC Pembroke Braves (24-23, 9-18 PBC) slugged out a four hour and three minute marathon in the final game in the stadium's history. The Braves won the game 19-10 to avoid the three-game Peach Belt Conference sweep. Prior to the game, USC Aiken honored seniors
Leroy Walker,
Demetrick Drumming, and
Clint Keown.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first,
Drumming made his senior day memorable by crushing his 14th homer of the season over the left field fence to give USCA its only lead of the game 2-1. He finished 3-for-6 on the day with two RBI and one run scored.
Drumming, for the first time in his career, tossed 0.1 of an inning of relief in the ninth. With two on and two out,
Drumming got
Adam Beaver to strike out.
Keown was 1-for-4 on the day but did steal base number 52 on the season as well as notching another outfield assist and scoring three runs.
Walker was 1-for-4 but scored three runs.
After plating two runs in the top of the fourth on a
Nick Hoffman single to push ahead 9-3, the Pacers came roaring back in the bottom half of the inning. USCA pushed across five runs in the inning on just one hit, but that hit was a monster one.
Tony Hanks hit a two-out grand slam to left center to slice the margin to a single run at 9-8. It was
Hanks' 14th long ball of the season as he finished 2-for-4 at the plate.
Walker scored in the fifth on a UNC Pembroke error to tie the game up at 9-9. But following a scoreless sixth, the Braves plated five in the seventh and five more in the ninth to win going away 19-10.
Paul Ferrell started the game for the Pacers but was one of seven hurlers used by head coach
Kenny Thomas on the afternoon.
Mike Pomaville worked 2.2 innings of relief allowing five runs, one earned, on six hits and one walk in picking up the loss.
Nick Wandless also worked 1.1 innings of one-hit baseball, breaking the school record for appearances in a season with 30.
Ashley Brewer worked 3.2 innings but was tagged for eight earned runs on six hits and six walks, striking out three in the no decision.
Dan Barzso allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits and two walks, striking out four in the win.
Ashley Farr had one hit on the day to finish his junior campaign with 100 hits, breaking his own school record of 94 set last season and coming up just two short of the Peach Belt Conference mark of 102. He will also hold PBC records for batting average in a season, in a career, and slugging percentage in a career.
Drew Paul led the Braves going 4-for-6 with two RBI and four runs scored while
Ryan Young,
Andrew Rosen, and
Beaver all had three hits each.
Rosen,
Hoffman, and
Paul each hit homers for UNC Pembroke.
