Quick Start Propels Rifles To Win

Box Score AIKEN, SC--USC Spartanburg (17-14, 6-9 PBC) held a 4-0 lead after three innings and held the Pacers' bats at bay in winning 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at J.H. Satcher Field.  USC Aiken (19-15, 5-9 PBC) took two of three in the Peach Belt Conference series but missed the opportunity for its second conference series sweep of the season.

Demetrick Drumming (7) hit a solo homer over the left field wall in the eighth inning to provide the Pacers with its only run of the game.  USCA did have its chances, however, stranding eight runners on base in the game.  The best shot came in the seventh with the score 4-0.  USCA loaded the bases with two outs and the red hot hitting Clint Keown coming to the plate (8-for-12 in the series).  But Stephen
Warren
got Keown to ground out to Adam Whiteside at second base to end the threat.

Warren (2-1) worked an effective 7.1 innings before getting knocked out after bare handing an Ashley Farr comebacker.  He did not allow a run, scattering seven hits, issuing one walk, and striking out eight.  Chris Hill struggled in relief giving up three hits in three batters faced, including the homer to Drumming.  Stan Smith pitched the final 1.2 innings retiring the Pacers in order.

Keown and Drumming both went 2-for-4 to lead the Pacers at the plate.

After plating one run in the second, the Rifles scored three in the decisive third inning.  Patrick Brannan led off with a double down the right field line.  Then a one out walk issued by Jerod Summer was followed by an RBI double to right center off the bat of Chris Nowak, scoring Brannan and Tim Gary.  Derek Ford singled through the middle to push across Nowak and make it 4-0.

Summer (2-1) allowed four earned runs on four hits and two walks, striking out one, in suffering his first loss of the season.  Harold Sofield tossed 4.2 innings of long relief giving up one earned run on four hits and one walk, striking out two.  Paul Ferrell and Mike Pomaville held the Rifles to no runs and two hits over the final 2.0 innings.

Ford registered three hits to lead the Rifles while Zach Huckabay and Nowak each tallied two hits and two RBI for USC Spartanburg.

???????Having concluded their 16-game home stand, the Pacers will hit the road for four-straight starting on Tuesday, March 25 when USC Aiken plays at Newberry at 6:00 PM.
