Box Score AIKEN, SC--Mike Pomaville (2-0) did not need much help from his offense in leading 14th ranked USC Aiken (3-1) to a 5-2 non-conference baseball win over Carson-Newman (2-4) on a chilly Friday night at J.H. Satcher Field. The Pacers erupted for five in the third and that proved to be enough.
Chris Martin reached on a two-out error by first baseman
Casey Calhoun in the second inning, allowing
Nick Jacobs to score from third base and give the Eagles the early 1-0 lead.
USC Aiken, however, turned the tables in the bottom of the third scoring all five of their runs in the inning. A key play, ironically, was a fielding error by
Martin, the shortstop. His miscue led to four unearned runs in the inning, all coming with two outs.
Clint Keown and
Justin Williams had back-to-back one out singles.
Keown scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1. Following the error,
Ashley Farr doubled to center field scoring
Williams and
Bradley Key.
Tony Hanks promptly drove in
Farr with a double to left center and
Adam Strongman capped off the scoring with a single to right field plating
Hanks and making it 5-1.
Pomaville, who won his Pacer debut just six days ago, dominated the Carson-Newman lineup. The 6-5 junior tossed 90 pitches in 7.0 innings of work, allowing four hits, one unearned run, and striking out six. He did not issue a walk in 26 batters faced.
Adam Green came on in relief in the eighth and surrendered the game's final run. He issued two walks and one earned run in two-thirds of an inning.
Chris Wilson finished off the eighth and then fellow freshman and Greenbrier High School product
Nick Wandless (1) tossed a perfect ninth in notching his first collegiate save.
Aside from the one rough inning, Eagles starter
John Wallace (1-1) also threw well. He worked 7.0 innings allowing five runs, but only one earned, on seven hits and one walk while striking out five in the loss.
Paul Davis held USCA in the eighth.
Williams went 2-for-3 at the plate, the only batter on either team with multiple hits.
Farr and
Hanks combined for three RBI and two runs scored.
