Box Score AIKEN, S.C.--USC Aiken won for the second straight time and for the third time in four games by defeating USC Spartanburg, 94-82, tonight at "The Courthouse" in Aiken, S.C. The two game winning streak is the first for the Pacers all season. USCA improves to 5-20 on the season and 4-13 in Peach Belt Conference play. The Rifles fall to 15-10 overall and 9-8 in the PBC.
Eric Dugans' assist to
Taurus Watson at the 16:58 mark of the first half gave Dugans the USC Aiken all-time career assists record with 421.
Thomas Ryan, who played for the Pacers from 1996 to 2000 held the record with 420 career assists.
Dugans finished the night with 11 assists in the game and 430 in his career.
"I am real pleased with the way our team is playing," said Pacer Head Coach
Mike Roberts. "The problem before was we weren't playing with confidence, now we are."
The Pacers used a 12-2 run in the first half to take control of the game and a 10-point lead, 31-21, with 4:53 before halftime. USC Spartanburg rallied again and again but the Pacers built a 16-point second half lead and held on for the 12-point win.
"They made runs at us tonight and we had confidence," said
Roberts. "I really liked the poise we showed in the second half."
A jumper by
Todd Williams, 29 seconds into the game, staked USC Aiken to a 2-0 lead. Petros Tsampas gave the Rifles their first lead of the game, 6-4, with a jumper of his own at the 17:19 mark. Tsampas' basket was part of an 11-2 run that gave USC Spartanburg its largest lead of the game, seven points, 13-6, with 14:43 left in the first half.
USCA answered with a run of their own and
Dugans' three-point basket with 11:08 remaining put the Pacers ahead 17-16. USC Aiken would not trail again.
After Kevin Harrington's two free throws for Spartanburg tied the game at 19-19, the Pacers began their 12-2 run to take control of the game.
Bryant Latimer capped the run with a three-pointer at the 4:53 mark to put USCA up 31-21.
Latimerhad six of the 12 Pacer points during the run. The junior established a new career high for the second consecutive game with 27 points on eight-of-15 shooting from the field and eight-of-10 shooting from the free throw line.
The Rifles cut the Pacer lead to three points, 33-30, with 2:41 left in the half. USC Aiken however, outscored USCS, 9-1, to close out the half and took an 11-point lead, 42-31, into the locker room.
Six straight points to start the second half by Spartanburg cut the USC Aiken lead to five points, 42-37, with 18:47 left in the game. The Rifles would get no closer the rest of the game.
Jamall Gray put the Pacers out in front by 11, 48-37, with a bucket at the 15:07 mark.
Latimer's three-pointer with 12:26 left to play put USCA ahead by 12 points, 54-42.
Spartanburg scored the next five points to cut the lead to seven, 54-47. After USCA went up by 14 points, the Rifles scored seven consecutive points to cut the lead to seven again, 65-58, with 5:28 on the clock.
The Pacers answered and
Latimer's free throw with 4:39 to play but the Pacers ahead by 10 points, 70-60. USCA would hold a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.
Another
Latimer jumper gave the Pacers their largest lead of the game, 16 points, 82-66, with 1:37 left to play. USC Aiken would hold a 16-point advantage two more times.
The 94 points scored were the most by a Pacer team in a non-overtime game since USCA defeated Johnson & Wales, 97-57, on December 18, 1998. Earlier in the 2002-03 season, USC Aiken was held to its lowest point total ever by this same USC Spartanburg team. The Rifles beat the Pacers, 62-41, on January 18.
For the game, the Pacers connected on 49.2 percent (29-for-59) of their shots from the field while Spartanburg hit on 50.9 percent (28-for-55) of their shots. The Pacers out-rebounded the Rifles, 40-27.
Harrington led USC Spartanburg with 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting. He also grabbed a game-high seven boards and dished out five assists.
Dugan's broke the school's assists record on the night that he was honored along with two teammates as part of the 2003 Senior Night activities.
Dugan's joined Watson and
Mitch Lewis in a pre-game ceremony commemorating their Pacer careers.
The Pacers will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Florence, S.C., to take on the Francis Marion University Patriots. The game is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
