Pacers Snap Losing Streak

Box Score GREENWOOD, S.C.--USC Aiken ended its school record 13-game losing streak tonight by defeating Lander University, 85-76, in Greenwood, S.C., in a match-up of Peach Belt Conference men's basketball teams.  The Pacers had not won since December 19, when they defeated Catawba College, 73-65, at "The Courthouse" in Aiken, S.C.  During that stretch USCA lost three games by one point, two games by six points and one by seven points.
The Pacers improve to 3-19 on the season and 2-12 in the Peach Belt Conference.  Lander drops to 5-16 overall and 2-11 in the PBC.
Todd Williamsjumper at the 6:19 mark of the second half broke the 10th tie of the game and gave the Pacers the lead for good.  Bryant Latimer's lay-up a minute later gave USC Aiken a three point lead, 67-64, and began an 11-2 run for USCA that sealed the victory.
Williams put an exclamation mark on the run with a dunk to give the Pacers a 10-point advantage, 76-66, with 1:24 left in the game.  The junior finished the game with 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field.  He also brought down a team-high eight rebounds, had three assists, three steals, a game-high eight blocks and did not turn the ball over in 36 minutes of play.
A three-pointer by Jimbo Tolbert with 20 seconds left in the game brought the Senators within five points, 81-76, but they would get no closer.  The Pacers connected on all four of their free throw attempts in the final 19 seconds to set the final score at 85-76.
Latimer gave USC Aiken a seven-point lead, 45-38, 19 seconds into the second half with a steal and a lay-up on the other end.  He finished with 20 points, on six-of-nine shooting from the floor and eight-for-10 shooting from the free throw line, to go along with six rebounds and two steals.
Adrian Penland cut the Pacer advantage to three points, 50-47, on his lay-up with 16:21 left in the game.  Ron Hampton's free throw four minutes later gave the Senators their first lead of the second half, 54-53.  Penland and Hampton combined for 44 of Lander's 76 total points.  Penland scored a game-high 24 points and Hampton notched 20 points along with grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds.
Another Hampton free throw gave Lander its largest lead of the game, four points, 61-57, with 10:15 on the clock.
Consecutive buckets by LatimerLee Burton and Williams put USCA back in front, 63-61, with 7:55 to play.  Burton led all Pacers with 23 points on seven-of-14 shooting from the floor, one-for-five from three-point land and eight-of-eight from the charity stripe.  Burton's 23 points and Latimer's 20 points marked the second time in as many games that the Pacers have had two players score 20 or more.
Sean Mims' basket with 6:25 remaining gave the game its 10th tie and set up the go ahead bucket from Williams to put USC Aiken in front for good.
For the game, the Pacers shot 52.9 percent (27-for-51) from the floor compared to just 40.9 percent (27-of-66) for Lander.  The Senators hit five of their 16 three point attempts while USC Aiken connected on just 3-of-10.  The difference came at the free throw line where USCA hit 28-of-33 free throw attempts for 84.8 percent.  Lander shot 58.6 percent from the line, 17-for-29.
Two points by Latimer 23 seconds into the game gave USCA an early 2-0 lead.  Penland trey put Lander in front for the first time, 9-8, with 17:35 before the break.
A jumper from Williams tied the game for the fifth time, 18-18, and began a 14-3 run for USC Aiken.  Williams capped off the run with a dunk to give the Pacers a 32-21 lead with 4:21 remaining in the first half.
Lander answered with an 11-1 run to get back within one point, 33-32, with 2:05 left.  Two free throws from Taurus Watson, with just three seconds remaining, appeared to give USCA a seven-point advantage heading into the locker room.  Ade Mason was able to break free for a lay-up as time expired to cut the deficit to five, 43-38.  It was Mason's two free throws with four seconds left in the USCA/Lander game at "The Courthouse" in Aiken on February 1 that gave the Senators the 62-61 win.
The Pacers will try to put together two consecutive wins for the first time all season when they return to action on Saturday.  USCA will travel to Milledgeville, Ga., to face their final
