Jenny Lloyd and
Amy Long combined for 48 kills and 32 digs as the Lady Pacers (12-16, 4-5 PBC) snapped a five-match Peach Belt Conference losing streak with a 3-1 win over UNC Pembroke (6-22, 0-9 PBC) on Saturday night at "The Courthouse" in Aiken, SC. Game scores were 30-28, 26-30, 30-14, and 30-25.
After falling behind 15-10 midway through game one, USCA came back to grab the lead 18-16 behind a 6-0 run. Long had two kills while freshman
Brandy Johnson, making her first collegiate start, recorded one of her two service aces on the night. The Lady Pacers had their biggest lead at 22-18, but saw the Lady Braves come back to knot it up at 25-25 on an ace by Meredith Craig. Tied 28-28, Long had a kill and then a block with teammate
Jessica Lane for the 30-28 win.
Long had 25 kills to just three errors in 52 total attacks for a .423 hitting percentage. The sophomore also added 18 digs and three blocks. Lane tacked on eight kills and two aces.
In game two, UNCP turned a one-point edge, 12-11, into a comfortable lead with a 6-1 run. An ace by
Rachel Dalitz cut the margin to three at 29-26, but Jennifer Paroda's kill ended the game 30-26 in favor of UNCP. Dalitz finished with 53 assists and 10 digs while Paroda totaled nine kills, 11 digs, three blocks, and 32 assists for the Lady Braves.
USCA opened strong in game three with a quick 4-0 run and went on to dominate the pivotal stanza. An 18-5 run produced a 25-9 lead for the Lady Pacers as they won 30-14.
In game four, a 7-4 UNC Pembroke advantage prompted a USCA timeout. Three straight kills by Lloyd helped the Lady Pacers pull back even at 10-10. Lloyd registered 23 kills and 14 digs on the evening.
Tied at 20-20, Long had a pair of kills and Dalitz an ace as the 5-0 Lady Pacer run created the necessary separation to take the game and match 30-25.
Helena Jantti added nine kills and two blocks while
Brooke Cubbage chipped in eight digs.
Amy Julien tallied 11 kills and seven blocks to lead UNC Pembroke. Natalie Neisborella added 10 kills and 19 digs.
USC Aiken hit .266 compared to UNCP's .160. The Lady Braves, however, out blocked USCA 12.0 to 6.0 and had 10 service errors to the Lady Pacers' 16.
USC Aiken plays at Augusta State on Wednesday, October 29 at 7:00 PM. UNC Pembroke hosts non-conference foe Catawba on Tuesday, October 28 at 7:00 PM.
